Implement basic REPL execution and fix piped stdin handling

What changes, and where to review

Ordinary piped stdin runs as a script. The basic interactive REPL instead keeps reading until one input record is complete, executes it, reports its result or exception, and continues. This PR moves that evaluation into the VM and shares it with the CLI shell; the shell keeps editing/history and input transport. The EINTR follow-up lets a Python signal handler run while the basic reader is blocked on an open pipe.

Suggested reading order:

  1. Lib/test/test_repl.py for input/traceback behavior, then crates/vm/src/vm/python_run.rs (run_interactive, run_basic_interactive, run_stdin_file). Script-stdin exit/error coverage also lives in test_cmd_line.py and test_runpy.py.
  2. extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_signal.py:check_native_stdin_eintr, then crates/host_env/src/readline.rs for the new interrupt regression and transport boundary.
  3. Lib/test/test_codeop.py and compiler interactive-input handling for warnings/future behavior. These existing tests do not directly cover every native record-boundary transaction.
  4. Review CAPI main-VM lifetime and unraisable-hook handling separately from stdin parsing, then the canonical Lib/updater changes.

Summary

Implement native stdin evaluation behind sys._baserepl and share it with the root shell. The shell retains line editing/history and input transport; the VM owns interactive record boundaries, compilation, execution and exception reporting.

  • Preserve finite input boundaries, prompts, encoding, source locations and linecache identities.
  • Collect interactive warnings and preserve callback exception ownership. Publish accepted future flags before later codegen errors, without publishing incomplete parse probes.
  • Track mutable effective-inspect state while preserving coherent immutable sys.flags snapshots.
  • Classify already-reported exceptions at the host boundary without printing twice; direct _baserepl SystemExit remains Python-catchable.
  • Preserve the original main VM through C API execution/finalization and harden unraisable-hook fallback handling.

Base and scope

This validated candidate was built on historical main fd5b30eb5 plus the exact #9161 benchmark import fix bf076f10c. #9161 has since merged into main. The evaluator work is a narrow extraction related to #8954; it preserves main's AST/source-context architecture and initialization policy.

Ten reviewable commits cover original-main CAPI lifetime, unraisable handling, warning collection, native evaluation, canonical REPL tests, compiler dev-dependency placement, explicit conditional-marker retirement, canonical stdin/audit tests, runpy attribution/capability markers, and native-reader EINTR propagation.

Delta against #9161: 29 files, +2,058/-565. Including #9161 against the stated main: 30 files, +2,059/-566.

CI repair and canonical tests

Initial head 2955e91 had four failed CI jobs:

  • Cargo-shear found the root compiler dependency was used only by benchmarks/examples. It is now a dev-dependency.
  • Linux, macOS and Windows Python jobs all reported the same four unexpected successes: audit excepthook, two stdin tokenizer/decoding tests, and runpy stdin exit handling. Their obsolete markers are retired. These four tests now pass normally locally.

Lib files were refreshed through the actual updater from pinned CPython 3.15.0 source, preserving applicable customizations. The closure includes the audit helper/empty fixtures and import helper. A small whole-file runpy refresh supplies the compile module name, making the new run_path warning-filter test pass; it also adopts canonical removal of __cached__ assignment. The import helper retains defaults for new parameters and adopts canonical cache-cleanup/import changes.

Six newly imported tests remain expected failures and still execute their bodies:

  • Three import-audit tests require absent _testcapi. Their conditional markers turn off whenever the module's spec is discoverable; these results do not establish import-audit semantics.
  • test_dump_path_config: explicit PYTHONHOME startup selection/fatal missing-encodings behavior is unimplemented.
  • test_import_time_unencodable_module_name: import-time tracing and surrogate-name import exception behavior remain unsupported.
  • test_run_module_filter_syntax_warnings_by_module: frozen SourceLoader still omits the compile module name. Its whole canonical update requires coordinated importlib/abc/tests changes, deferred here.

Validation

Initial published candidate: c5f9224c22e1d6f0914d7ef7a605d05a6244c5b2; its hosted CI completed successfully with all 25 jobs. Follow-up candidate: 65cb4cb8d4917b82fcf98422d88a04e6b062e5b3. All commits ran normal hooks.

Initial candidate results (follow-up gates are listed below):

  • Default/release and workspace/CAPI test builds; cargo-shear; strict workspace and separate ABI3T CAPI Clippy passed.
  • Workspace doctests: 24 passed, 18 existing ignored. CAPI doctest gate passed with zero runnable tests.
  • Release regression packet: 27 tests, 20 normal passes and seven expected failures (six above plus one retained invalid-UTF8 marker). All four original unexpected successes and the new run_path warning-filter test pass normally.
  • Actual release repository test_codeop: 13 tests, SUCCESS. Six exact finite-pipe test_repl filters: SUCCESS, including the retained return/yield expected failure.
  • Sealed workspace native tests: 22 executables, 1,358 passed. Separate ABI3T CAPI: 123 passed and four existing ignored. No failures or timeouts.
  • Fresh external canonical module admissions passed; 17/19 selected methods passed, with the two limitations below.

Earlier feature checks passed on 2955e91; after the dependency move, c1f4e3 default, development-target, no-default and root-CAPI checks passed. Subsequent changes through c5f9224 affected Python/updater sources only; the EINTR follow-up changes the native reader and its caller. Builds use two jobs and CARGO_INCREMENTAL=0, with the repository release profile.

Comparison and limits

The fresh fixed admission plus 27 observations have clean integrity checks and agree with CPython 3.15.0 final on stdout/status. Six stderr differences remain: three incomplete-record parser diagnostics, and three suite cases affected by main's older traceback keyword-suggestion rendering.

Fresh external canonical results were 17/19 selected methods passing: return/yield parser diagnostics and three duplicate-parameter wording subcases remained different. Existing repository codeop expectations use “duplicate argument” and pass. No manual assertion weakening, string postprocessing, vendor-parser workaround or partial Lib backport is included. A coherent traceback refresh is deferred.

This validates finite pipes, not full terminal/PTY or Windows parity. Terminal signal delivery, explicit fork lifecycle, real memory exhaustion and excluded PTY/asyncio paths were not tested; the follow-up below adds bounded pipe-EINTR signal coverage. Existing startup helper limitations and main's absent relative-lazy-import warning remain outside this scope.

The official reference reports CPython 3.15.0 final, with executable/libpython hashes pinned. Its exact build commit is unproven; canonical source is separately pinned to d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc.

Native reader EINTR follow-up

A review found that Rust's BufRead::read_until retries Interrupted internally, preventing the basic reader from reaching VM signal dispatch while stdin remains open. The follow-up uses the same shared stdin buffer through fill_buf/consume, returning interrupts before retrying and releasing the input lock before Python handlers run. Its EOF guard preserves Rust's already accumulated bytes; this is not a claim of CPython partial-fgets parity.

Three deterministic transport tests cover delimiter/remainder preservation, per-call byte counts, partial EOF, interruptions/retries and ordinary errors. A regression in the existing signal snippet uses an explicit native REPL over empty pipes: a returning SIGINT handler must acknowledge before any input is sent, then a complete sentinel line executes once and EOF exits zero. The exact bounded test passes on official CPython 3.15.0 and the fixed candidate; the prior published head times out before acknowledgment.

Separate diagnostics remain nonpassing or outside this narrow fix:

  • Default KeyboardInterrupt now promptly recovers and executes subsequent input, but the candidate exits zero whereas CPython remembers the reported interrupt and terminates with SIGINT (-2 as a POSIX subprocess return code). This finalization-policy difference is not fixed here.
  • Direct sys._baserepl() on a noninteractive pipe selects file mode in CPython, whereas RustPython currently enters its basic interactive loop. The comparison explicitly supplies -i to both.
  • CPython may discard bytes consumed by an interrupted partial libc fgets; the public regression intentionally supplies no input before handler acknowledgment.

No terminal/PTY, Windows signal, or continuation-prompt coverage is claimed. Follow-up validation on 65cb4cb8: strict workspace and ABI3T CAPI Clippy; workspace/CAPI test builds; 24 workspace doctests (18 existing ignored); CAPI doctest gate (zero runnable tests); release build; 1,361 workspace native tests; 123 CAPI tests (four existing ignored); actual release codeop (13 tests) and four finite-pipe REPL methods; and the complete RustPython signal-snippet pytest node all passed. Each runtime gate used bounded, owned-process cleanup.

Other review findings

Two suggested behavior changes were not applied:

  • Preserving the earlier command failure after a successful -i session would conflict with pinned CPython pymain_repl, which replaces that status with the REPL result.
  • Raising OSError for every ordinary stdin read failure would conflict with the canonical raw tokenizer's EOF-like read-error handling and accumulated-input handling. Codec-backed input behaves differently; full codec/error parity remains unverified.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds interactive input parsing and execution, updates interpreter lifecycle, exception handling, and command-line behavior, and adds validation for retiring conditional expected-failure markers in migration patches.

Changes: Interactive execution and interpreter control

Layer / File(s) Summary
Interactive parser and syntax-error handling
Cargo.toml, crates/compiler/src/lib.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ast.rs, crates/vm/src/vm/vm_new.rs
The compiler adds EOF-aware parse-error metadata and an interactive_input parser. The VM uses EOF metadata when building syntax errors.
Interactive parser warning emission
crates/vm/src/vm/compile.rs
Interactive warning emission deduplicates warnings across accumulated input and adjusts locations for numeric and bytes-literal escape warnings.
Interactive stdin and REPL execution
crates/host_env/src/readline.rs, crates/vm/src/vm/python_run.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/sys.rs, src/shell.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_signal.py
The VM adds interactive and script-mode stdin execution. The shell and basic REPL use the VM loop, and a subprocess test covers SIGINT during a blocked read.
Exception display and exit classification
crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/sys.rs, crates/vm/src/vm/mod.rs, crates/vm/src/vm/vm_object.rs
The VM adds uncaught-exception and unraisable reporting, traceback display helpers, and system-exit and keyboard-interrupt classification. sys.excepthook delegates normalized exception display to the VM.
Interpreter state and process finalization
crates/capi/src/lib.rs, crates/host_env/src/{errno.rs,os.rs}, crates/stdlib/src/{faulthandler.rs,posixsubprocess.rs}, crates/vm/src/{frame.rs,signal.rs}, crates/vm/src/stdlib/{os.rs,posix.rs}, crates/vm/src/vm/{crossinterp.rs,interpreter.rs,mod.rs}
The interpreter tracks inspect state, main-thread execution, and unhandled keyboard interrupts. It adds status-aware finalization and C-API main-thread registration. Host exit paths distinguish flushed termination from immediate termination.
Startup, REPL selection, and exit status
.cspell.dict/cpython.txt, crates/vm/src/getpath.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_testinternalcapi.rs, crates/vm/src/vm/setting.rs, src/lib.rs
The command-line entry point dispatches run modes and returns exit statuses. It adds startup and interactive-hook handling, PyREPL selection, and configured program-name handling.

Conditional expected-failure marker retirement

The new VM-driven REPL generally behaves like CPython, but three gaps remain. Pressing Ctrl-C in the REPL and then exiting normally can end the process as if it were killed by SIGINT. A read error on piped stdin silently runs the truncated program instead of reporting the error. A non-UTF-8 executable path can crash startup. The first two should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merge.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Return Interrupted to the caller so Ctrl-C works at the basic REPL prompt.

BufRead::read_until retries ErrorKind::Interrupted inside its own loop and never returns it. As a result, the Err(error) if error.kind() == Interrupted arm in run_basic_interactive (crates/vm/src/vm/python_run.rs, Lines 476-478) never runs, and check_signals is not called while the read blocks.

This affects sys._baserepl on a terminal. When the user presses Ctrl-C at a >>> prompt, the REPL shows no KeyboardInterrupt and does not cancel the input. The read keeps blocking until the user presses Enter. Then the pending signal fires during the next record instead of at the prompt.

Write the loop over fill_buf here so that an interrupt reaches the caller. The bytes already copied into line stay there, which matches the contract in the doc comment.

The kernel can still restart the read without returning EINTR if the VM installs its SIGINT handler with SA_RESTART. In that case, also check how the handler is installed.

youknowdot and others added 17 commits October 18, 2026 17:14
Run and finalize the original main VM while keeping the registered attachment template available without holding its mutex across Python callbacks.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Keep the existing message API and traceback formatting while handling missing, disabled, audited and failing hooks without panicking.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Retain ordinary warning behavior and typed module APIs while exposing record-local parser warnings and post-warning code generation. Add a source-only lazy future-import guard.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Use one evaluator for basic REPL and root transports, preserve effective inspect snapshots and future flags, and carry owned host exit status through original-main finalization.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Run update_lib migrate from pinned CPython 3.15.0, preserving three remaining platform/runtime markers and retiring the two traceback/startup failures verified on the native evaluator.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
The native evaluator now compiles through the VM. Only root benchmarks and the parse_folder example use rustpython-compiler directly, so declare it as a dev dependency while preserving VM compiler features.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Require exact selector and original decorator evidence for each conditional expected-failure marker retired by migrate. Preserve undeclared guards and reject missing, duplicate, modified or unconsumed declarations.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Migrate the pinned CPython 3.15.0 modules and their canonical helper fixtures through update_lib. Retire exactly four failure markers proven obsolete by hosted CI, preserving all other existing guards.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
…ties

Migrate whole canonical runpy.py to pass module names to compile. Use update_lib to annotate only reproduced missing-capability cases: absent _testcapi import-event tests, unsupported startup/import-time features, and the deferred frozen-loader module-attribution caller.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Preserve the shared input buffer and partial bytes while returning EINTR to the VM before retrying. Exercise the transport deterministically and verify a returning SIGINT handler while pipe stdin stays open.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
single_mode_multiple_statements_error now reports "invalid syntax" at the
statement that follows a compound first statement, and interactive_input
runs it right after parsing as compile() does.

The lazy `from __future__` import check moved from lazy_future_import_error
into unsupported_grammar_error, so it applies to every compile mode.

test_run_module_filter_syntax_warnings_by_module passes.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
- src/lib.rs follows pymain_run_python: pymain_run_stdin, pymain_repl,
  pymain_run_startup, pymain_run_interactive_hook and pymain_run_pyrepl
return exit codes instead of raising SystemExit.
- VirtualMachine gains run_any_stdin (_PyRun_AnyFile),
  run_interactive_loop (_PyRun_InteractiveLoop) and run_simple_stdin;
run_shell feeds rustyline lines into run_interactive_loop, and
  sys._baserepl calls run_any_stdin.
- print_uncaught_exception (PyErr_Print) replaces
  report_uncaught_exception, and handle_system_exit_and_keyboard_interrupt
  replaces handle_reported_exception.
- An unhandled KeyboardInterrupt is recorded and the process exits
  through SIGINT after finalization.
- Interpreter::run_main replaces run_with_exit_status and InterpreterExit;
  rustpython_capi::run_main_interpreter takes an exit-code callback.
- config_set_inspect audits cpython.PyConfig_Set and rebuilds sys.flags
through set_flag_obj (_PySys_SetFlagObj); the inspect state is an
AtomicBool and dict replace_by_identity is removed.
- add_main_module (PyImport_AddModuleRef("__main__")) is used by the
  interactive and simple-file paths.
- The interactive parser warning helpers take their state directly.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
- print_uncaught_exception (PyErr_Print) calls exit_process (Py_Exit) for a
SystemExit when inspect mode is off, instead of returning the exception.
run_interactive_loop no longer checks SystemExit itself and flushes after
printing an error; sys._baserepl returns None.
- exit_process finalizes through VirtualMachine::finalize_ex, which holds
the Py_FinalizeEx steps split out of Interpreter::finalize, and exits
  through host_env::os::exit_with_cleanup (C exit()).
- The basic REPL on a terminal (PYTHON_BASIC_REPL, or _pyrepl missing)
runs run_any_stdin instead of the rustyline shell.
- run_shell saves the history after every line.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
…nning __main__

- display_exception (PyErr_Display) and display_exception_to (_PyErr_Display)
try traceback._print_exception_bltin before the native printer and flush
the file. PyErr_Print's excepthook fallback, print_exception and
sys.excepthook use them. A missing sys.stderr is reported with
  dump_object (PyObject_Dump); a None sys.stderr prints nothing.
- Paths gains program_name (argv[0]) from getpath. The "can't open file"
message uses it with strerror(errno) and goes to sys.stderr.
- running_main holds the ident of the thread running __main__.
pymain_run_python sets it around running the main code, Py_Exit clears it,
the fork child reinitializes it, and _interpreters.is_running reads it
instead of treating the main interpreter as always running.
- Interpreter::run_main clears the unhandled KeyboardInterrupt flag before
running and applies exit_sigint after finalizing; finalize no longer
  does.
- run_interactive_loop returns a SystemExit raised outside inspect mode
again and no longer flushes after printing an error; run_shell saves the
  history once after the loop.
- pymain_set_inspect reports its error through print_uncaught_exception.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
A parser error that starts at the end of the source is reported as
_IncompleteInputError when incomplete input is allowed, so the
interactive loop and codeop keep reading after `try:` and its block or
after a decorator line.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
A parse error on the NEWLINE, DEDENT or ENDMARKER the tokenizer makes up
at the end of the input now carries an EofToken: the number of lines
read and the last line. SyntaxError takes its lineno and text from it,
and its offset is that line's length with end_offset -1, or 0 for both
when the error is raised at the token itself (the generic syntax error
and a missing forced `:` or `(`). Exec input that does not end with a
newline is checked with one appended.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
- host_env::os::exit now calls the C exit() on every platform; on Windows
std::process::exit ends in ExitProcess, so it flushes the Rust stdout
and calls libc::exit there. The former exit, which calls _exit(), is
now exit_immediately, used by os._exit, faulthandler and
  posixsubprocess.
- errno::strerror_string is available on wasi.
- PyGlobalState::reinit_running_main is built only where its fork caller
  is.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use env::args_os() so that a non-UTF-8 argv[0] does not panic.

std::env::args() panics when the argument it returns is not valid Unicode. init_path_config calls program_name() for every top-level interpreter. If a user starts RustPython through a path that is not valid UTF-8, interpreter initialization panics. The same thing happens when an embedding host has such an argv[0]. Before this change, path setup read argv[0] only through args_os() in get_executable_path. A lossy conversion is enough here, because the value is only used in diagnostics.

Clear the unhandled SIGINT flag before each interactive iteration.

run_interactive_loop continues after printing a handled KeyboardInterrupt. handle_system_exit_and_keyboard_interrupt sets the process-wide flag, while run_main clears it only once before the whole loop. After EOF, run_main can therefore call exit_sigint() for an interrupt that the REPL already handled.
