Align lazy imports and f/t-string interpolation with Python 3.15 - #9179
Conversation
Source-only checkpoint; candidate validation and the existing annotation expectation reconciliation remain pending. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Update only the nine existing expected strings confirmed against pinned CPython 3.15, with explicit user approval. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Escape literal debug prefixes, retain None AST expression metadata internally, and continue incomplete triple-quoted t-strings in the existing shell. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable

The canonical expected strings no longer trigger literal_string_with_formatting_args, so the previous lint expectation is obsolete. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable

Reconcile the published interpolation branch with upstream main 924e342. Add the lazy runtime and canonical library closure without the pending interactive-input branch. Reuse the main compiler APIs for lazy grammar checks and ordered AST-only warnings. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable
Copy canonical traceback and legacy exception mappings with preserved RustPython guards. Copy explicit non-Python library assets by exact path so exception hierarchy data does not expand into the entire test package. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version unavailable

`__lazy_modules__` before calling `is_module_level(vm)`. This lets eager
function imports without that global return without materializing function
locals; preserve the existing module-level check before applying the configured
lazy-module names.
Review comments at @crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ast/python.rs:
- Around line 330-343: Update the AST node initialization path around the
deprecation warning to call NodeAst::slot_init only when the class’s initializer
slot differs from NodeAst’s initializer; let PyType::call handle inherited
initialization, while preserving base AST field validation and defaults for
subclasses with their own __init__.

Summary
Split a coherent Python 3.15 language/runtime closure from the mega patch: lazy imports, f/t-string source-text handling, and their canonical standard-library consumers.
types.LazyImportTypeused by canonical annotation handling.Interpolation.str=None, escape debug prefixes, and retain the published native REPL continuation repair.d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edcwithscripts/update_lib, including complete annotationlib/tests and tokenizer coverage. Genuine existing guards are retained; no assertion-only Lib backport or new failure marker. The existing nine Rust annotation expectation strings were changed to pinned CPython outputs with explicit approval. No new Rust tests implementing Python behavior were added.
Main-independent CI repair
The prior published head failed
test_annotationlib.TestTypeRepr.test_type_repron all three hosted platforms because its old expectation stripped source whitespace. The complete canonical annotation refresh also requires real lazy-import support, so this revision includes that meaningful runtime closure rather than hand-editing the assertion or adding skips.Source
d415d1a3c502a5ab73493a65063c4f49f979c5a6incorporates main924e34200fb7a607bc521f9dde21d2524b07cafc. It does not include #9163 commits or its interactive flow. The shared warning/checker integration is adapted to main's existing API; #9163 remains independently owned and may require normal overlap reconciliation when it lands. Earlier validated local stacks remain preserved as historical evidence.CI closure repair on 812cbe6
The d415 hosted run completed with the same four persistent failures on Linux, macOS and Windows:
test_baseexception,test_pickle,test_pickletools, andtest_traceback. This follow-up brings the complete canonical exception hierarchy, compatibility pickle mappings, traceback implementation and traceback tests throughscripts/update_lib; it preserves the three existing traceback guards. The updater now copies an explicitly selected non-Python data file without accidentally expanding its parent package, covered by four updater regressions. The complete canonical traceback suite exposed two native gaps, now fixed: class attribute-deletion errors retain
AttributeError.name/obj, and_missing_stdlib_infoprovides the canonical generated platform messages without inventing CPython build-specific disabled-module reasons.Fresh final-source Linux release and oracle-first validation:
test_traceback: 434 total, 186 passed, 246 skipped, 2 expected failures; pinned CPython: 433 passed, 1 skip.test_baseexception: 11 passed on both.test_exceptions: 93 passed, 13 skipped, 1 expected failure; oracle: 109 passed, 3 skipped. Two initial build attempts exposed cross-worktree Cargo cache reuse; explicit local-package release cleanup resolved it without source changes. Failed attempts remain recorded. Generated-cache-only audit failures were reconciled with preserved cache bytes and clean source audits. Completed native executables/intermediates were retired only after source-bound results and hashes were retained. The broader d415 results below remain historical evidence for that source; they were not all repeated on this follow-up. Hosted final-head platform CI remains required.
Prior complete validation on d415d1a
Fresh Linux release build, offline with two Cargo jobs, and independently sealed artifacts:
Canonical annotationlib: 119 passed, 1 CPython-only skip; pinned oracle: 120 passed.
Canonical t-string: 16 passed, 1 CPU-resource skip, matching the oracle.
Canonical lazy imports: 157 passed, 4 skips; oracle: 161 passed.
Canonical AST: 205 passed, 9 skips, 6 expected failures; oracle: 218 passed, 2 skips.
Canonical tokenize: 127 passed, 5 expected failures; oracle: 132 passed.
test_types.TypesTests.test_namesactually executed and passed. Two existing piped native REPL methods and three existing codeop methods passed against both interpreters. All four observation outputs match the pinned oracle byte-for-byte: 43 interpolation expressions including AST/annotations, 13 lexical-warning cases, 7 lifetime/identity cases, and 10 tokenizer cases. This closes the earlier AST-dump formatting differences on this combined closure; it is not a claim of complete compiler parity.
Strict workspace and C-API Clippy, compiler-only nonthread check, fresh workspace native tests (1,370 passed), C-API native tests (123 passed, 4 ignored), workspace doctests (24 passed, 18 ignored), and C-API doctests (0 tests) passed.
Seven full import/startup regression suites (
test_importlib,test_import,test_pkgutil,test_site,test_zipimport,test_cmd_line,test_cmd_line_script): 1,625 total, 1,403 passed, 198 skipped, 24 expected failures, with the exact local importlib exclusion disclosed below. All test subprocess results and cleanup receipts are retained. Some successful gates initially failed the filesystem audit because subprocesses generated new bytecode caches despite top-level
-B; those failures were preserved, the exact new cache bytes were reversibly quarantined, and clean source/artifact audit boundaries were re-established before subsequent gates.Coverage limits
These fresh runtime results use the Linux filesystem stdlib backend and default test resources. No CPU-resource expansion or unsupported C-API shim was used. Importlib excludes only the previously denied
*test_fastpath_cache_cleared_in_forked_childcases, whose duplex multiprocessing Pipe uses AF_UNIX; that exclusion is local and is not a new test marker or CI configuration change.A historical frozen-stdlib lazy-import traceback fixture mismatch remains unresolved and was not rerun in this validation. It concerns frozen fixture filenames versus the filesystem assertion; no hidden exclusion or filename/frame-filter workaround was added. Fresh hosted merge-ref/platform checks, including the repository's existing frozen build coverage, remain required. No CI workflow was expanded.
