Summary

  • Cache the original builtins __import__ callback during bootstrap, so canonical importlib's hierarchical module locks re-enter RustPython's existing parent-initialization handling.
  • Refresh the complete importlib production/test families from CPython 3.15.0 (d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc) through scripts/update_lib. Refresh canonical test_import, os_helper and import_helper for the related __cached__, source-date epoch and make_legacy_pyc changes.
  • Refresh whole canonical inspect, types, test_inspect, test_types and test_pkg as the dependent closure for removed module.__cached__ metadata. Add native coroutine/async-generator state properties and export the existing FrameLocalsProxy type.
  • Preserve all existing RustPython guards. Add narrow updater support for the importlib and types nondecorator guards, exact hash-pinned canonical removals, and canonical empty fixtures.

The canonical package refresh retires 42 obsolete modules/fixtures. Each was explicitly selected, matched to an official historical CPython blob and confirmed absent from the pinned canonical tree; none has a RustPython marker or surviving external reference. Removal validates the full selection before writing and supports dry-run/idempotence. No generic package pruning or Git-history trust framework is added.

The import_helper refresh overlaps unmerged #9163 because canonical test_import requires its allow_compile argument. No production runpy, site, pkgutil or zipimport refresh, parser change, full lazy-import runtime, or duplicate ordinary lifecycle snippet is included. Canonical inspect’s lazy declarations currently execute through the existing eager lowering; this does not claim PEP 810 runtime parity.

Behavior and canonical regression map

The canonical hierarchical lock manager and parent-initialization callback need the original native builtin import callback. Existing native initialization and cache handling supply that behavior.

Canonical hierarchical deadlock and cross-package circular import regressions both pass on this candidate. Frozen/Source loader, fromlist and cache tests also run, so no duplicate implementation-detail snippet was added.

AI assistance from OpenAI Codex was used for source analysis, migration-tool changes and validation. Canonical test bodies were imported through the updater, with existing RustPython guards preserved.

Dependent CI repair

Full Ubuntu CI at the initial head passed test_importlib and test_import, then exposed stale inspect --details and test_pkg expectations of module.__cached__. Whole canonical dependent files replace those assumptions. Canonical inspect also consumes cr_state/ag_state and the corresponding types._GeneratorWrapper properties, so the paired native and types refresh is part of this closure.

Canonical coroutine lifecycle, generator-wrapper states, CLI details and frame-locals proxy regressions pass locally.

The native state helper prioritizes the published closed state while frame-local finalizers reenter during cleanup. A distinct regression in the existing vm_frame_locals.py covers coroutine and async-generator closure without an event loop. The real FrameLocalsProxy type is exported with its pinned CPython class docstring.

Two new CLI tests require unavailable _testcapi fixtures and receive narrow conditional capability skips through the updater. The unchanged canonical test_types.test_names assertion was run first and failed only because LazyImportType is absent. It now has a conditional expected-failure guard for that missing real feature; all assertions remain unchanged. No placeholder type or lazy-runtime implementation is introduced.

Validation

Hosted CI is complete on repair head eeeae0ee1364a2072a5fa5c3a9f083d4de537f76: 30 successful checks and one optional pyperformance comparison skipped. Full Python suites pass on Ubuntu, macOS and Windows, including inspect/types/pkg/importlib/import and both CPython/RustPython vm_frame_locals targets. Windows test_site.test_underpth_file hit a temporary-executable WinError 32 once and passed the runner’s automatic exact-test rerun. The repaired modules passed without reruns.

Fresh release build and frozen bootstrap provenance pass. Python modules pass: test_importlib (1,217 tests), test_import (128), test_pkgutil (21), test_site (43), test_support (63), test_zipimport (91), test_inspect (372), test_pkg (8), test_types (136), plus exactly one canonical runpy warning-attribution diagnostic and the selected vm_frame_locals pytest target. Existing skips and expected failures remain; see local limitation below.

Native workspace tests pass (1,359); separate CAPI tests pass (123, four existing ignores). Workspace doctests pass (24, 18 ignores), and separate CAPI doctest gate has zero cases. Strict all-targets Clippy passes separately for workspace and CAPI with -D warnings. Compiler-only nonthreading VM check passes. Builds and candidate execution were serialized with two jobs and incremental compilation disabled; all gates have bounded process cleanup.

Source/tooling checks completed:

  • 249 updater tests on CPython 3.15; normal source hooks and git diff --check.
  • All 27 production importlib files, inspect.py, types.py, test_pkg.py and both support helpers match the pinned canonical bytes.
  • Exact canonical package file sets (98 importlib, 34 import and 10 inspect files), plus whole canonical test_types.py; all existing RustPython guards are retained. Only the three narrowly documented capability/missing-feature decorators are newly added.
  • Explicit deletion dry-run, apply and repeat-idempotence receipts.

Local runtime limitation: the standard test runner excludes *test_fastpath_cache_cleared_in_forked_child in the two metadata inheritors and *TestGetAsyncGenState* in test_inspect because those cases create AF_UNIX socketpairs unavailable to this local workflow. Canonical test bodies are unchanged. Full hosted inspect/importlib suites pass on all three OSes with these local exclusions absent; the async-generator class has only its normal enabled socket-platform guard. Windows filters only an unrelated launcher version test. Big-memory and network resources are not enabled. Dynamic extension ABI cases retain normal capability skips, distinct from the separate native CAPI test gate.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Coroutine objects now expose their current state: created, running, suspended, or closed.
    • Async generators now expose their current state: created, running, suspended, or closed.
    • The frame locals proxy type is available through the _types module.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Frame-local finalizers now see coroutines and async generators as closed after they finish closing.
  • Documentation
    • Added documentation for the frame locals proxy and its frame argument.
  • Chores
    • Migration tooling can validate and remove selected canonical test files, with a dry-run option.

Cache the original builtin __import__ callback so CPython 3.15 importlib's
hierarchical locking uses the existing native parent-initialization path.
Refresh the complete canonical importlib and related test/helper families
from CPython d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc through update_lib.

Preserve both nondecorator importlib guards in the updater. Add explicit
hash-pinned removal of reviewed obsolete canonical files, with full
preflight, dry-run, idempotence and refusal tests. Preserve empty fixtures.

Refresh whole canonical inspect/types production and related test families
through update_lib after hosted CI exposed stale __cached__ consumers.
Add coroutine and async-generator state getters, with closed-state priority
for reentrant frame-local finalizers, and expose the existing frame-locals
proxy type with its CPython class documentation.

Preserve the optional _datetime and unittest import blocks through a narrow
migration adapter. Retain canonical assertions and existing guards; record
the missing LazyImportType expectation before adding a conditional expected
failure, and capability-skip only the two absent-_testcapi CLI fixtures.

P2 Badge Reject Windows junctions in removal paths

On Windows, if the destination or any intermediate destination directory is a junction, Path.is_symlink() returns false because junctions are exposed separately, so this guard accepts the path. The later target.read_bytes() and target.unlink() follow that junction, allowing a selected, hash-matching file outside the repository to be deleted; reject junctions as well or verify each resolved target remains under the resolved destination.

Fixed in f038891. The existing component guard now rejects junctions alongside symlinks during preflight and revalidation. Added regressions for source/destination roots, ancestors, nested components, and a junction appearing during revalidation; they verify that the entire batch stays untouched. All 262 updater tests pass on CPython 3.15 and RustPython. Junction detection is mocked in these tests; actual Windows junction execution and protection against concurrent filesystem replacement are not claimed.

P2 Badge Honor active async-generator operations in ag_state

When an async generator reaches an await while an __anext__()/asend() operation is still in progress, Coro::send has returned and clears inner.running, but running_async (the exposed ag_running) intentionally remains true until that operation completes. Calling inner.state_name therefore reports AGEN_SUSPENDED; because inspect.getasyncgenstate() now delegates directly to this property, this regresses its previous ag_running-first result of AGEN_RUNNING. The running branch for ag_state needs to use the async-generator operation flag while retaining closed-state priority.

Checked against our pinned CPython 3.15 source: ag_getstate reads the frame state and maps suspended yield from/await to AGEN_SUSPENDED; ag_running exposes the separate async-operation flag.

With __anext__() pending at an await, both CPython 3.15.0 and RustPython report (ag_running, ag_suspended, ag_state, inspect.getasyncgenstate(ag)) == (True, True, 'AGEN_SUSPENDED', 'AGEN_SUSPENDED'). All nine canonical TestGetAsyncGenState tests pass on both, including AGEN_RUNNING observed inside the executing frame. Keeping the current implementation: using running_async here would diverge from the pinned 3.15 behavior.
