Description

Adds ROX_POLICY_WORKLOAD_TYPE_EXCLUSION (off in product, on in CI e2e) and Sensor capability WorkloadTypeExclusionCap so mixed-version clusters can advertise support for policy exclusion by workload type.

This is PR 1 of 6 (flag → proto → validate → sync → UI → e2e).

User-facing documentation

Testing and quality

  • the change is production ready: the change is GA, or otherwise the functionality is gated by a feature flag
  • CI results are inspected

Automated testing

  • added unit tests
  • added e2e tests
  • added regression tests
  • added compatibility tests
  • modified existing tests

How I validated my change

CI only. Behavior testing TBD and will be covered in later stack PRs (beginning PR 3).

Skipping CI for Draft Pull Request.
If you want CI signal for your change, please convert it to an actual PR.
You can still manually trigger a test run with /test all

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for excluding workloads of selected Kubernetes types, such as Jobs and CronJobs, from policy evaluation.
    • Sensors advertise compatibility with workload-type exclusion rules when the feature is enabled.
    • Added a deployment setting to control workload-type exclusions. The feature is disabled by default in deployments.
    • End-to-end test environments enable the feature by default; deployments can override its setting through environment configuration.

Walkthrough

The change adds a default-disabled workload-type exclusion feature flag and a sensor capability. Sensor detection reports the capability when the flag is enabled. E2E scripts set the flag and pass it to operator-deployed Central and Sensor instances.

When E2E runs explicitly disable the flag, Central and Sensor can exercise different feature states. Correct the override before relying on false-mode test coverage; the default configuration remains unaffected.

Pass the configured value to operator Central.

When ROX_POLICY_WORKLOAD_TYPE_EXCLUSION=false, operator Sensor receives false, but Central always receives true. Central and Sensor can therefore run with different feature states in the same E2E run.
