Summary

Implement builtin frozendict from PEP 814, using CPython 3.15.0 final as the comparison baseline.

  • Keep PyDict, PyFrozenDict, and PyAnyDictRef together in dict.rs, preserving public reexports and readonly globals-member layout
  • Own immutable dictionary storage directly, with shared dict views/iterators, cached order-independent hashing, subclass-aware construction and unions, copy/deepcopy, pickle, and GC support
  • Support frozen globals in eval/exec and frame/function APIs, preserving readonly function.__globals__ member layout; accept frozen type namespaces through a mutable class-namespace copy
  • Extend existing dictionary C-API reads and eval/frame APIs; reject writes without exposing mutable backing storage
  • Preserve the 58 original regression cases and add three focused frozen-namespace edge cases in the existing extra_tests/snippets/builtin_dict.py runner
  • Match the final-release public type documentation and align proven test markers through update_lib without weakening assertions

The C-API work follows this crate's abi3/abi3t scope. New non-limited CPython PyFrozenDict_* exports and type statics remain outside its current ABI architecture.

Scope and validation

Rebased on main f39da82d9d38cd5bdceb9e645205e830f65126fb; current head c6ddfae40d380380b0349f353716a2c549fd108e. The first three commits separate the consolidated Rust implementation, scoped update_lib tooling, and canonical copy/test alignment. Current-main fixes are preserved.

  • Independent source review checked the dict/frozendict/anydict consolidation, checked wrapper construction, immutable writes, readonly globals-member layout, and interpreter-frame globals owner-slot lifetimes.
  • This Rust prerequisite includes exact-final copy.py through update_lib. The broader _collections_abc.py refresh and Mapping registration are deferred to the subsequent canonical library stage; this PR does not claim complete 3.15 standard-library integration.
  • Marker-only edits retain original test bodies and assertions. Proven obsolete project markers are removed through update_lib; observed default-debug recursion failures retain conditional expected-failure classification. Separately, the whole doctest finder definition is copied byte-for-byte from final 3.15 by the bounded, hash-checked copy-test mode.
  • Default-feature debug validation uses the correctly stamped 28623c11e executable (native and Lib source unchanged in the tooling-only follow-up): all 61 frozendict regression cases in the dictionary snippet, all 81 test_copy cases, six canonical doctest examples, and all 164 update_lib fixtures pass with warnings treated as errors. The 12 selected marker cases give nine passes and three expected failures at the unchanged default recursion limit of 256.
  • The correctly stamped default-feature release executable passes the same 61 regression cases, 81 copy cases, six doctest examples, and 164 tooling fixtures with warnings treated as errors. All 12 selected marker cases pass at the unchanged release recursion limit of 1000. Fresh root-interpreter, VM-library, and C-API all-target Clippy pass with -D warnings; all eight inspected ordinary-dictionary C-API tests pass (117 unrelated cases filtered).
  • The exact hosted native feature combination (stdlib,importlib,stdio,encodings,sqlite,ssl-rustls-aws-lc,host_env,doc,threading,jit, no default features) passes cargo check. Local runtime executables use the project's default features; runtime coverage of hosted feature/platform combinations remains the normal CI gate.
  • Certified final CPython comparison passes 60 of the 61 snippet cases; the remaining case cannot run in that locally certified oracle because its build omits _testinternalcapi. No snippet was removed or skipped to produce the native result.
  • Eight existing ordinary-dictionary C-API tests were validated separately. Direct frozen C-API entry-point/reference/error-contract coverage is not replaced by the Python suite. New Python behavior regressions remain in extra_tests, not Rust tests.
  • Review follow-up c6ddfae40 makes canonical test copying reject any differing decorator text, including inline or inter-decorator marker rationales. All 167 tooling fixtures pass on the unchanged debug and release executables; a fresh canonical-copy reconstruction remains byte-identical to the checked-in doctest module.
  • Formatting and normal commit hooks pass. Local validation is deliberately bounded and does not claim a full workspace or full standard-library run. Hosted CI for the current head is pending; the old head's green run is historical only.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds the frozendict builtin and extends dictionary operations to support frozen dictionaries. Execution globals and C dictionary APIs now accept generalized dictionary references, while mutation paths retain mutable-dictionary requirements.

Changes: Frozen dictionaries and generalized globals

Layer / File(s) Summary
Frozen dictionary type and shared reference
crates/vm/src/builtins/dict.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/mod.rs, crates/vm/src/types/zoo.rs
Adds PyFrozenDict and PyAnyDictRef. Implements frozen mapping construction, lookup, hashing, union, protocols, and builtin type registration.
Dictionary operations, views, and validation
crates/vm/src/builtins/dict.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/mappingproxy.rs, crates/vm/src/protocol/mapping.rs, crates/vm/src/protocol/callable.rs, extra_tests/snippets/builtin_dict.py
Updates merging, equality, fromkeys, views, iterators, mapping proxies, and callable dispatch for generalized dictionary references. Adds frozen dictionary operation and view tests.
Frozen dictionaries as execution globals
crates/vm/src/scope.rs, crates/vm/src/frame.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/frame.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/function.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/type.rs, crates/vm/src/function/protocol.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/*, crates/vm/src/vm/*, crates/vm/src/warn.rs, src/shell/helper.rs, extra_tests/snippets/builtin_dict.py
Scopes, frames, functions, evaluation, and class creation accept generalized dictionary references. Frame lookup and global specialization account for frozen globals. Builtin insertion is handled separately for frozen globals.
C API dictionary support
crates/capi/src/ceval.rs, crates/capi/src/dictobject.rs, crates/capi/src/pyframe.rs
C dictionary read operations accept supported dictionary-like objects. Mutation operations require mutable dictionaries and report frozen-dictionary assignment or deletion errors.

34-49: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Make hash_or_unhashable call key_hash, and keep the __cause__ link in key_hash.

key_hash copies PyDict::hash_or_unhashable (Line 327-344) but leaves out err.set_cause(Some(cause)). If a key's __hash__ raises TypeError, a dict sets the original exception as __cause__ on the wrapped error. A frozendict raises the wrapped error with no cause. Users and tracebacks see different error chains for the same failure, depending only on the mapping type. Two copies of the same logic can also drift further apart. Put the full behavior in key_hash and have the dict helper call it.

♻️ Proposed consolidation
 pub(crate) fn key_hash<K: DictKey + ?Sized>(
     key: &K,
     mapping_name: &str,
     vm: &VirtualMachine,
 ) -> PyResult<PyHash> {
     match key.key_hash(vm) {
-        Err(exc) if exc.class().is(vm.ctx.exceptions.type_error) => {
-            let name = key.to_pyobject(vm).class().fully_qualified_name(vm)?;
-            let message = exc.as_object().str(vm)?;
-            Err(vm.new_type_error(format!(
-                "cannot use '{name}' as a {mapping_name} key ({message})"
-            )))
+        Err(cause) if cause.class().is(vm.ctx.exceptions.type_error) => {
+            let message = cause.as_object().str(vm)?;
+            let name = key.to_pyobject(vm).class().fully_qualified_name(vm)?;
+            let err = vm.new_type_error(format!(
+                "cannot use '{name}' as a {mapping_name} key ({message})"
+            ));
+            err.set_cause(Some(cause));
+            Err(err)
         }
         result => result,
     }
 }

Then replace the body of PyDict::hash_or_unhashable with key_hash(key, "dict", vm).

P1 Badge Remove newly added test logic from the existing snippet

This starts a 1,179-line addition of new regression assertions and test classes in an existing test file, while the repository's critical test policy limits acceptable test-file edits to adding or removing expected-failure markers and their upper TODO comments. This block should not be landed without an explicit policy exception.

P1 Badge Restore the original doctest assertion

Widening this bound changes an existing test assertion, which the repository's test policy explicitly forbids; the implementation or test marker strategy must be adjusted without rewriting the assertion.

P2 Badge Preserve frozendict's own class documentation

After extend_class installs the dedicated PyFrozenDict::DOC declared above, these lines immediately replace it with dict.__doc__. Consequently frozendict.__doc__ advertises the mutable dict constructor and the exact documentation assertion added in extra_tests/snippets/builtin_dict.py fails; leave the generated frozendict documentation in place instead.

P2 Badge Publish a single winning cached hash

In threading builds, two simultaneous first calls to hash() can both observe the sentinel; if a contained value's Python __hash__ yields different results across those calls, each caller returns its own result and the last relaxed store replaces the earlier cache, so the same frozendict can have two hashes and fail when used in a dict or set. Publish with compare-exchange and return the already-published value on loss, as the PyFrozenSet cache does.

CPython v3.15.0 uses the same relaxed store in frozendict_hash: https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/v3.15.0/Objects/dictobject.c#L8392-L8427 . Reference probes reproduce cache replacement for reentrant or concurrent calls when a contained value returns changing hashes. With stable value hashes, both calculations agree. Keeping CPython behavior in this PR rather than adding a defensive divergence for values that violate the hash contract; this is not an atomic memory-safety issue.

* Target Python 3.15 using the final upstream reference

Update active version and comparison configuration to Python 3.15.0. Preserve the alpha implementation status, actual bytecode format, and existing libraries pending separate migration. Align generated library-upgrade workflow pins without changing permissions or actions.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model identifier unavailable

* Adapt essential snippet contracts to Python 3.15 final

Preserve existing coverage while following verified final behavior for script metadata, builtin signatures and loading, AST fixture construction, memoryview diagnostics, mmap search bounds, and struct format errors. The unchanged final comparator exposes the earlier expectations; focused native baseline failures establish the required implementation changes.

* Keep final-reference regression paths and remove expired sysconfig argument

Preserve reverse multiplication syntax and native exact overflow diagnostics. Accept the two source-proven CPython 3.15 specialization messages only in affected reverse str/bytes/tuple cases. Use an actually out-of-range Windows datetime errno fixture. Remove the sysconfig check_home argument at its existing canonical 3.15 removal test boundary.

* Align merged runtime contracts with Python 3.15 final

Restrict mappingproxy ordering, use final codec registry normalization, and prefer index conversion before float conversion for sleep. Retain universal Python assertions and import the matching final codec/time canonical test hunks plus the non-ASCII codec-name deprecation warning.

Upstream source: CPython d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc. The existing codec normalization implementation and bytecode contract remain unchanged.

P2 Badge Preserve causes when wrapping frozendict hash errors

When a key's __hash__ raises an exact TypeError, this branch creates a replacement error but drops exc; the corresponding PyDict::hash_or_unhashable path attaches that exception as __cause__. Consequently construction, lookup, and membership on a frozendict lose the original traceback even though the same operations on a dict preserve it, so build the new error and call set_cause(Some(exc)) before returning it.

Checked this against the pinned CPython 3.15.0 final source: dict_unhashable_type fetches the exact TypeError, formats a replacement, and decrefs the original without setting a cause (https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc/Objects/dictobject.c#L2438-L2457).

The update uses one helper for dict and frozendict with that behavior, and propagates argument str/repr failures. The bounded regression checks exception identity, cause/context, and formatting for both types; it passes on the pinned CPython oracle and the new RustPython build.

These are new tests in a new #[cfg(test)] module in dict.rs; no existing test assertions, logic, or data were changed. They check Rust layout/alignment, native pointer identity, ownership/refcounts, traversal, and checked PyRef<PyAnyDict> conversion. Those structural invariants need Rust coverage. Python-visible behavior is tested in the existing extra_tests/snippets/builtin_dict.py. The cited restriction on modifying existing tests does not require removing this new native safety coverage.

Preserve reverse dictionary iterator fixes and the 3.15 frame imports. Keep library refreshes separate pending the runtime dependency sequencing decision.

Index conditional test classes and methods without crossing namespaces, reject ambiguous targets, and preserve inherited override indentation. Add hash-pinned whole-test copying that verifies execution context and exact source bytes, with focused Python fixtures.

Import exact-final copy.py with update_lib; defer Mapping ABC registration to the later library stage. Generate only proven marker corrections, retain observed debug recursion-limit expected failures, and copy the complete canonical builtin-doc discovery test using hash-pinned update_lib copy-test.

Reject differing decorator source blocks even when their ASTs match. Cover inline and multiline marker comments, guarded async methods, and CLI no-write behavior.

Use the landed PyRef target model for a transparent dict/frozendict header
view, retaining objects explicitly with PyRef<PyAnyDict>. Keep targets
sealed and preserve mutable-only entry points. Borrow frame globals from
the object header rather than movable reference wrappers.

Unify exact-TypeError key diagnostics with final CPython semantics,
including callback failure propagation and no explicit cause. Keep the
Python regressions in builtin_dict and test reference layout/ownership
in Rust. Preserve existing canonical library updates.

- Name the target type in unhashable key errors through
  PyDict::update_arg (dict_update_arg), replacing the separate
  PyFrozenDict::merge_into copy of the merge logic.
- Split the | operator into dict_or (_PyDict_Or) and frozendict_or.
- Return the argument from frozendict(frozendict) only when the called
  type is frozendict.
- Call through the vectorcall slot in PyCallable::invoke when there
  are no keyword arguments, instead of special-casing frozendict.
- Add ensure_builtins (_PyEval_EnsureBuiltins) for eval/exec, and
  insert __builtins__ for source strings regardless of globals type.
- Read __warningregistry__ and __name__ from stored globals entries and
  accept only None or str for the module name in setup_context.
- Remove the unused PyFrozenDict::from_object.
- Migrate test_dict.py, mapping_tests.py, test_copy.py and
  test_builtin.py to v3.15.0 with update_lib, and add
  test_import/data/syntax_warnings.py.
- Drop builtin_dict.py frozendict tests covered by those modules,
  keeping the descriptor and namespace integration tests.
