Issue for this PR

No issue. Requested directly: asks from nested subsessions should bubble up to the root, and every view that lists subsessions should show them nested.

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Refactor / code improvement
  • Documentation

What does this PR do?

Subagents can now launch their own subagents, so session trees go root → child → grandchild. The web and desktop app still assumed one level in a few places.

  • Asks on the root. The session view loaded pending forms for its whole tree but permissions only for the viewed session. A subagent's permission request raised before the app loaded stayed invisible until you opened that exact subagent. The view now loads both for every session in the tree.
  • Background tabs.
    • A background tab loads the pending asks of its running subagents, so its dot lights up for an ask raised before the app connected.
    • A tab waiting on an ask anywhere in its tree reopens at the root, which shows every ask in the tree. Before, it reopened at the subagent it last showed, which might not show that ask.
  • Running menu. It listed only direct children, so a grandchild running under an idle child never appeared. It now lists running sessions at any depth, each indented under the subagent that launched it. A finished subagent stays as the parent row of work it started that is still running; that row is static, isn't counted and has no stop button. The indent uses padding-inline-start, so it mirrors in RTL.
  • Settings → Worktrees. The session list showed subagents in one flat list. They now sit under their parent at any depth.

Views left top-level only on purpose:

  • the Home session list and both command palettes;
  • idle and error notifications (only root sessions notify);
  • project unread markers;
  • the session picked after a delete;
  • the extensions' list of a session's background work.

Tabs hold root sessions, and subagents open inside their root's tab at any depth. The breadcrumb, titlebar, Escape-to-parent and subagent cards already worked at any depth.

Depends on #64 for grandchildren on a fresh load. That PR makes the shared data layer (@opencode/client/solid) find a root's whole subtree. Without it, the client loads only direct children at startup, so a grandchild's earlier ask appears once it is created live or its parent is opened. This PR's logic is already correct for a fully loaded tree.

How did you verify your code works?

  • New tests, each failing before its fix:
    • e2e session-request-docks.spec.ts: a child's pending permission is visible and answerable on the root after a fresh load.
    • e2e timeline-stream.spec.ts: the running menu nests three levels, keeps a finished parent with its running child, stops a nested session and opens a nested row.
    • e2e tabs.spec.ts: a background tab's dot lights up for a subagent's earlier ask and reopens at the root. Removing only the reopen-at-root logic fails a separate assertion.
    • Unit paths.test.ts: Worktrees nesting order.
  • The new e2e tests passed 10 repeats each at 5 workers (30/30).
  • bun typecheck in packages/app and bun run check at the root: pass. test:browser: 173 pass.
  • test:unit: 760 pass, 1 fail. "recovers project metadata after the connection to the server is dropped" fails the same way on the base commit and loads none of these files.
  • Across the three touched e2e spec files run in parallel: 70/71. The one failure is a keyboard-shortcut test that also fails on the unmodified code on macOS.

Screenshots / recordings

Covered by the e2e regressions above. The running menu change is indentation within the existing menu.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Workspace sessions now appear in a nested layout that reflects subagent relationships.
    • The running-work menu shows nested subagents and their status, with stop controls available only for running sessions.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Permission and form requests from nested sessions are now surfaced across the session tree, including when the session is in a background tab.
    • Background tabs needing attention retain their link to the relevant root session and show an unread indicator.

The session view loaded pending permission requests only for the viewed session, while forms were loaded for its whole subagent tree. A subagent's permission that was asked before the view loaded stayed hidden until that exact subagent was opened. Load permissions for every session in the tree, as forms already are, so the root shows and answers asks from subagents at any depth that the data layer has indexed.
The header's running menu listed only the subagents its owner started. Subagents those subagents started never appeared, and running work under a subagent that had already finished was dropped. List every running session below each subagent, nested under the subagent that started it at any depth, and keep a finished subagent as an uncounted, unstoppable parent row while work it started still runs.
A background tab loaded pending asks only for its root session, so a subagent that asked before the app loaded never marked the tab as needing attention. And a tab that last showed one subagent reopened there, where an ask from another subagent or the root cannot be answered. Load the asks of a background tab's running subagents, and when its session tree waits on an ask, reopen the tab at the root, which shows every ask in the tree.
The worktree settings listed every session in a worktree in one flat list, so subagent sessions at any depth were mixed in among the sessions that started them. List each session followed by its subagent sessions, indented one step per level.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes represent nested sessions in running-work menus and workspace lists. They synchronize permission and form requests for running descendants in background tabs. Regression tests cover nested-session display, navigation, interruption, and permission replies.

Changes: Nested Session Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nested running-work tree

The running-work menu now represents running descendants and finished ancestors as a nested tree. Rows show depth and running status. Regression coverage checks nested entries, navigation, and interruption.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 6da91

The change nests running subagents in the menus and workspace lists and syncs pending asks for background tabs. No remaining merge-blocking risk was identified from the supplied review evidence.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6da91

The change makes nested work and its permission requests more visible while preserving session-specific responses and existing cancellation operations. No introduced security bypass was established, but server-side authorization and repeated-cancellation behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly reachable client actions concern loaded descendant sessions on the selected server: displaying their requests, responding to those requests, navigating to them, and interrupting running descendants. This establishes client-side scope, not proof of server-side tenant authorization.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Server-provided session metadata supplies the parent-child relationships used to derive new menu targets. Tree-derived targets are owner-rooted, while existing listed tasks absent from the tree remain optimistically stoppable. That fallback and its interruption sink already existed; no newly introduced arbitrary-target path was established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Permission responses suppress duplicate submissions for the currently responding request and conditionally clear that state after completion or failure. Permission-replied events remove requests by session and request identity. These existing controls remain in place as descendant request discovery expands.

lint:changed fails when a touched GUI file has any oxlint problem. Move the running-session tree and the session.created test event into new, clean files instead of editing background.ts and the shared e2e timeline utils, reach a tab routed to a subagent through the UI instead of a new seed option in e2e/utils/app.ts, and justify the existing type assertions in paths.test.ts with SAFETY comments. No behavior changes.
A background subagent stays listed until its completion notice reaches the parent's history. When it had already finished but work it started still ran, the menu marked it running anyway, so it was counted, animated and given an interrupt button. Take the running flag from the session tree for listed subagents, and keep counting a listed subagent the tree does not know until its notice arrives.
