crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/base.rs:375-384
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winCanonicalize ctypes field views before the mutable borrow.
A union with two non-character array fields creates distinct field views at offset
0. Formemoryview(u.a)[:] = memoryview(u.b),root_exporterstops at the two distinct field objects, so it does not copy the source. The assignment then holdsobj_bytes_mut()foru.aandobj_bytes()foru.bat the same time. These locks are distinct, but the slices overlap. This creates overlapping Rust mutable and shared references and can cause undefined behavior incopy_from_slice.Make

@coderabbitai Regarding the outside-diff finding: The overlapping-field finding is fixed in 48a903362. The minimal strided assignment case failed before the fix and now matches CPython on Windows and Linux. This closes the assignment-specific overlap path; the broader storage-lifetime and external-alias issues remain a separate follow-up. Assisted-by: Codex:GPT-6 |

🟠 Major · Snapshot from_address sources before writable access. · memory.rs:1552-1564

from_addresssources before writable access.
from_addressobjects have no shared ctypes base, so overlapping objects resolve to differentroot_exportervalues. The assignment then passes overlapping slices tocopy_from_slice, which requires non-overlapping storage and can cause undefined behavior. The overlap test establishes that the source must be read before writes begin.Suggested fix

Share the owner lock for borrowed field buffers
On RustPython's normal no-GIL builds, if one thread writes through memoryview(owner.values) while another reads or writes owner, this branch guards only the field object's lock even though its slice points into the owner's Vec. The other access takes the owner's distinct PyRwLock, so borrowed_slice_as_mut can coexist with an overlapping Rust reference and a real data race, which is undefined behavior and can corrupt the managed allocation; base-backed CData buffer access needs to use storage/locking shared with its owner instead of manufacturing a mutable slice under the view lock.
