Adds a _testcapi module written in Rust, like the existing _testinternalcapi, with the helpers that do not need the C API. With it importable, test.support.requires_debug_ranges() stops skipping, so the co_positions and column offset tests in test_compile, test_dis and test_code now run (about 45 tests, all passing except test_dis_with_linenos_but_no_columns).

_testcapi helpers:

  • config_get, config_getint (PyConfig_Get over the interpreter settings and sys attributes), code_offset_to_line
  • the C limit constants, Py_Version, nan_msb_is_signaling
  • run_in_subinterp, err_formatunraisable, Py_CompileStringExFlags, PyTime_AsSecondsDouble
  • type_get_version, type_modified, type_assign_version
  • MethInstance, MethClass, MethStatic and the module level meth_* functions
  • _spawn_pthread_waiter, _end_spawned_pthread

Fixes for gaps that the newly running tests exposed:

  • code objects built by marshal, code() and code.replace() drop column info under -X no_debug_ranges, as _PyCode_New does (test_marshal)
  • run_unraisable raises the sys.unraisablehook audit event (test_audit)
  • syslog rejects openlog/closelog, and syslog before the log is open, from subinterpreters (test_syslog)
  • the _testinternalcapi._PyTime_* functions now follow Python/pytime.c with its rounding modes instead of ignoring them (test_time)

Tests that now run and need the rest of _testcapi (vectorcall, the datetime capsule, testBuf, set_nomemory, C defined types, ctypes.pythonapi) or hit other RustPython gaps are marked. The tests that now pass have their markers removed (test_zipimport testTraceback, test_threading test_threads_join*).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added compatibility and testing utilities for Python C API, time conversion, code compilation, and interpreter behavior.
    • Code objects now omit column-level source location details when debug ranges are disabled.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Syslog calls from subinterpreters now report errors when syslog is unavailable or cannot be opened.
    • Unraisable exceptions are audited before the configured exception hook runs; audit-hook failures are reported to standard error.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add code-location metadata removal for code objects, restrict selected syslog operations in subinterpreters, add built-in test API modules and time-conversion helpers, and audit calls to sys.unraisablehook.

Changes: Code location metadata

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rewrite code location tables
crates/compiler-core/src/bytecode.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/code.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/marshal.rs
A bytecode helper removes column data from location-table entries. Code-object creation, replacement, and marshal loading apply the transformation when debug ranges are disabled.

Syslog in subinterpreters

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guard syslog operations
crates/stdlib/src/syslog.rs
openlog and closelog return runtime errors in subinterpreters. syslog returns a runtime error there when syslog is not open; the main interpreter retains its automatic-open path.

Test API and runtime support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register _testcapi and expose test methods
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_testcapi.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/mod.rs
The built-in _testcapi module exposes constants, configuration lookup, subinterpreter and waiter operations, and method-call test forms.
Add compatibility and type-test helpers
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_testcapi.rs
The module adds unraisable-exception formatting, compile-string handling, timestamp conversion, and type version-tag operations.
Add _testinternalcapi time conversions
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_testinternalcapi.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_testinternalcapi/pytime.rs
The pytime submodule adds rounding, range-checked and clamped conversions, and Python wrappers. The internal module registers the submodule and removes three inline conversion functions.
Audit unraisable-hook calls
crates/vm/src/vm/mod.rs
run_unraisable audits sys.unraisablehook before calling it. If the audit hook raises, the VM writes the exception to stderr and does not call sys.unraisablehook.

Bound scan_varint before the next shift.

code() and code.replace() accept unvalidated co_linetable bytes. With no_debug_ranges, six continuation bytes can make scan_varint evaluate a u32 shift by 36. Check the bound and stop decoding. Checking only the shift expression still allows shift to keep growing on longer inputs.

Suggested fix

         read = iter.next().copied().unwrap_or(0);
         shift += 6;
+        if shift >= 32 {

Reset WAIT_DONE before _end_spawned_pthread returns.

The spawned thread clears WAIT_DONE only after receiver.recv() returns. The clear happens asynchronously. _end_spawned_pthread sends the signal and returns while WAIT_DONE can still hold Some. If a test calls _end_spawned_pthread and then _spawn_pthread_waiter right away, the second call can raise "thread already running". Clear the slot in _end_spawned_pthread with take(). That call drops the sender, and the waiter thread then wakes.

Proposed fix
         std::thread::spawn(move || {
             let _ = receiver.recv();
-            *WAIT_DONE.lock().unwrap() = None;

Update _end_spawned_pthread to take the sender from WAIT_DONE before sending the

P1 Badge Restore datetime C-API test execution

When _testcapi is now importable but lacks test_datetime_capi, this unconditional class decorator suppresses every fast datetime C-API test instead of retaining executable failure coverage, so later partial implementations cannot expose regressions or unexpected passes. Implement the setup helper/Rust functionality rather than skipping the entire class; repository policy reserves skips for tests that would crash, abort, or hang the test process.

P2 Badge Reject oversized location varints before shifting

Under -X no_debug_ranges, CodeType construction and code.replace(co_linetable=...) now send user-supplied linetables through this scanner; a NoColumns or Long payload with seven 0x40 continuation bytes advances shift past 31 and panics in dev/test builds instead of returning a Python error. Bound the number of chunks or reject an oversized varint before performing the shift.

P2 Badge Keep the syslog open check under the logging lock

When the main interpreter calls closelog() concurrently with a subinterpreter logging call, host_syslog::is_open() releases global_ident's read lock before host_syslog::syslog() reacquires it, so closelog() can clear the state in between and libc syslog() then implicitly reopens the log from the subinterpreter. That bypasses this new restriction and leaves the host wrapper believing the log is closed; the open-state check and log operation need to be atomic in the host layer.

P2 Badge Preserve the audit-hook traceback in the fallback report

When an audit hook raises for sys.unraisablehook, this branch calls write_unraisable_to_stderr, whose implementation writes only the exception type and message and never emits e.traceback(). The resulting fallback omits the stack showing which audit hook failed, unlike the default unraisable report this path is intended to emulate; route this through a traceback-aware default-hook path.

Footnotes

  1. 4 benchmarks were skipped, so the baseline results were used instead. If they were deleted from the codebase, click here and archive them to remove them from the performance reports. ↩

Add remove_column_info to compiler-core and apply it to code objects
built by marshal, code() and code.replace() when code_debug_ranges is
off, as _PyCode_New does.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
run_unraisable now audits "sys.unraisablehook" with the hook and its
arguments before calling the hook, and reports an audit hook failure
through the default hook.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
openlog() and closelog() raise RuntimeError outside the main
interpreter, and syslog() does too when the log is not open yet.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
Implement the Python/pytime.c conversions with their rounding modes and
expose the _PyTime_* functions of Modules/_testinternalcapi/pytime.c,
replacing the _PyTime_AsTimespec(_clamp) and _PyTime_AsTimeval_clamp
stubs.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
Implement the _testcapi helpers that do not need the C API:
config_get, config_getint, code_offset_to_line, the C limit constants,
nan_msb_is_signaling, run_in_subinterp, err_formatunraisable,
Py_CompileStringExFlags, PyTime_AsSecondsDouble, the type version
functions, MethInstance, MethClass, MethStatic, the meth_* functions,
_spawn_pthread_waiter and _end_spawned_pthread.

Mark the tests that now run and need the rest of _testcapi or hit
other gaps, and remove the markers from the tests that now pass.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
The test now runs because _testcapi is importable, and the authorizer
callback does not report the OverflowError as unraisable.

Shouldn't this use the capi functions we implement in the capi crate?

Shouldn't this use the capi functions we implement in the capi crate?

Or should we implement _testlimitedcapi using that?

test_send_error passes on Windows, and run_in_subinterp fails on the
wasi build, which has no threading feature.

P1 Badge Gate faulthandler tests on fatal_error availability

On any run with subprocess support, registering this partial module makes _testcapi is None false in Lib/test/test_faulthandler.py:303-320, so both test_fatal_error methods execute child code that calls the still-undefined _testcapi.fatal_error; the child emits AttributeError rather than the expected fatal-error report and the test module fails. Implement that helper or keep those tests as documented expected failures until it exists.

P2 Badge Export the actual time_t width to pytime tests

On 32-bit Unix targets whose libc::time_t is 32-bit (notably the i686 GNU target in .github/workflows/ci.yaml:396), these new helpers use a 32-bit TimeT, but CPyTimeTestCase.setUp() derives its valid range from _testinternalcapi.SIZEOF_TIME_T, which remains hard-coded to 8 in _testinternalcapi.rs:74. Since making _testcapi importable now runs that class, values above the 32-bit range pass its filter and then unexpectedly raise OverflowError (and clamp expectations use the wrong limits); update the internal size constant to size_of::<TimeT>() as well.
