The periodic jsontests collector died with SIGUSR1 (exit 138) in `test_pty.PtyTest.test_spawn_doesnt_hang`.

`pty.fork` prefers `os.forkpty`. Without it, the fallback is `openpty` + `fork` + `login_tty`. Nested spawn then hangs the collector.

This adds `os.forkpty` (child may see master fd `-1`, as on Apple) and rebuilds `select` fd sets after EINTR so an interrupted call cannot block forever on empty sets.

Verified locally: `pty.spawn([executable, '-c', 'print("hi there")'])` returns `b'hi there\r\n'` with status 0.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added posix.forkpty(), allowing applications to start a child process connected to a pseudo-terminal and receive its process ID and master file descriptor.
    • Added safeguards for interpreter shutdown and environments where process forking is unavailable.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved select() behavior after interrupted system calls by rebuilding file descriptor monitoring correctly and reliably returning empty results when calls time out.
    • Improved handling of pseudo-terminal resources during process creation.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds POSIX forkpty support to the host and Python POSIX layers. It also rebuilds descriptor sets during select() retries and increases deepcopy benchmark iterations.

Changes

POSIX forkpty support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Host forkpty wrapper
crates/host_env/src/posix.rs
The host layer calls libc::forkpty, returns OS errors, and clears FD_CLOEXEC on the parent master descriptor.
Python POSIX integration
crates/vm/src/stdlib/posix.rs
The new posix.forkpty checks interpreter state, emits the audit event, runs fork hooks, and returns the process ID with the master descriptor.

select() retry handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Descriptor set rebuild and result conversion
crates/stdlib/src/select.rs
select() retains selectable entries, computes nfds from their descriptors, rebuilds fresh sets for each attempt, converts successful results, and returns empty lists after timeout.

Deepcopy benchmark scaling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Benchmark iteration updates
benches/benchmarks/deepcopy.py
The benchmark driver defines N = 10 and uses it for the benchmark calls.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a86c7

The forkpty path may create a child successfully but report failure during descriptor cleanup, potentially orphaning the child and breaking PTY callers. This remains a moderate merge risk.

pty.fork prefers forkpty so a nested spawn is a new session with its
own controlling tty. The openpty+login_tty fallback hung the
jsontests collector.

select(2) updates the sets in place. Retrying an interrupted call
with empty sets and a NULL timeout blocks forever.

Preserve the successful forkpty result when cleanup fails.

set_inheritable performs fallible F_GETFD and F_SETFD calls. After libc::forkpty creates the child, ? converts a cleanup failure into Err. posix.forkpty then raises an exception without returning the PID or master FD, so the caller cannot manage the child. Make this post-fork cleanup best effort, or otherwise return the successful fork result.

A millisecond handler timeout races the client thread writing the
