# fMRI Classification Example — Full

A MATLAB demonstration of fMRI pattern classification, with the example data and toolbox archives included.

[GPL-3.0 license](LICENSE)

This example reproduces the workflow from [Poldrack's fMRI classification example](https://github.com/poldrack/fmri-classification-example). It classifies n-back task data with a linear SVM and compares original and shuffled labels.

## Quick Start

1. Open the repository directory in MATLAB.
2. Configure a supported C++ compiler for LIBSVM's MATLAB interface:

```matlab
mex -setup c++
FCE
```

[FCE.m](FCE.m) runs preparation followed by classification. Preparation extracts the included NIfTI and LIBSVM archives, builds LIBSVM's MEX files, and decompresses the included fMRI images. Run it in the repository directory so its relative paths resolve.

The [original environment notes](Notes) record MATLAB R2015b, LIBSVM 3.22, and NIfTI tools dated 22 January 2014. These are historical versions, not a verified compatibility range for current installations.

## Repository Structure

- [FCE.m](FCE.m): entry point.
- [FCE_prepare.m](FCE_prepare.m): archive extraction, LIBSVM compilation, and image preparation.
- [FCE_classify.m](FCE_classify.m): classification and label-shuffling comparison.
- [FCE_nii2x.m](FCE_nii2x.m): conversion of NIfTI images into classifier input.
- [fmri-classification-example-master/](fmri-classification-example-master/): bundled images and the original Python notebook.
- [NIfTI_20140122.zip](NIfTI_20140122.zip) and [libsvm-master.zip](libsvm-master.zip): toolbox archives.
- [Notes](Notes): historical environment and compiler troubleshooting.

The [nested README](fmri-classification-example-master/README.md) describes the original Python notebook; the MATLAB entry point for this repository is `FCE.m`.
