Description

GHA jobs that run as reusable-workflow flavors (e.g. the three qa-e2e-tests flavors per dispatch run: gke, gke-konflux, ocp) all report to ci-metrics stackrox_jobs under the same flattened name, and their clusters carry no flavor-precise identity either — GITHUB_JOB resolves to the job id defined inside the called workflow, identical for every caller. Downstream consumers cannot tell which job row or which cluster belongs to which flavor, forcing heuristic matching (nearest started_at) when correlating CI outcomes with cluster-level data — e.g. the spot-preemption attribution in acs-san-stackroxci.ci_infra_audit.

Job side — two additional fields in the existing post-job save_job_record call (bq_save_job_record already supports arbitrary field/value pairs):

  • ci_job_name: the CI_JOB_NAME env var (the caller's ci-job-name input, e.g. gke-qa-e2e-tests vs gke-qa-e2e-tests-konflux). Jobs that do not set it report NULL.
  • attempt: github.run_attempt, typed INTEGER like pr_number.

Cluster side — two GCP labels in gke.sh, so clusters carry the same join key:

  • stackrox-ci-job-name=${CI_JOB_NAME} (the caller-workflow ci-job-name input, mirroring the ci_job_name metrics column; the existing stackrox-ci-job label is the flattened GITHUB_JOB; named to avoid colliding with provisioning flavors, which mean ocp-4/gke-default/etc. in automation-flavors)
  • stackrox-ci-attempt=${GITHUB_RUN_ATTEMPT}

With both sides carrying (run id, flavor, attempt), cluster↔job-metrics joins become exact with no heuristics.

Merge prerequisite: the stackrox_jobs table needs the columns added first, or the INSERT fails (metrics reporting soft-fails per job):

ALTER TABLE `acs-san-stackroxci.ci_metrics.stackrox_jobs`
  ADD COLUMN ci_job_name STRING,
  ADD COLUMN attempt INTEGER;

User-facing documentation

  • CHANGELOG.md is updated OR update is not needed
  • documentation PR is created and is linked above OR is not needed

Testing and quality

  • the change is production ready: the change is GA, or otherwise the functionality is gated by a feature flag
  • CI results are inspected

Automated testing

  • added unit tests
  • added e2e tests
  • added regression tests
  • added compatibility tests
  • modified existing tests

No tests: the change adds pass-through fields to the shell reporting path and two labels to cluster creation; both are exercised by every GHA e2e job on the branch.

How I validated my change

The reporting path was verified against live data during the analysis that motivated this change: three qa-e2e-tests rows per dispatch run, two starting within 25 seconds of each other, demonstrating that nearest-start matching is unreliable. The label expansion follows the existing stackrox-ci-* label construction in gke.sh (same sanitization, bash -n clean). After merge: SELECT name, ci_job_name, attempt FROM stackrox_jobs ORDER BY stopped_at DESC LIMIT 10 should show distinct ci_job_name values per qa-e2e flavor, and gcloud container clusters describe should show the new labels.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • CI job records now include the job name and run attempt when available. Pull request numbers and attempt values are recorded as integers in CI metrics.
    • Clusters created in GitHub Actions now include labels for the CI job name and run attempt. Job names are normalized for label compatibility, with fallback values used when information is unavailable; other CI environments are unchanged.
    • These details make CI job records and cluster labels more consistent across runs.

GitHub Actions job records now include the CI job name and run attempt. BigQuery treats the attempt as an integer parameter. GitHub Actions cluster creation adds CI job name and run-attempt labels.

Changes: CI metadata

Layer / File(s) Summary
Job record metadata and parameter typing
.github/actions/job-preamble/action.yaml, scripts/ci/metrics.sh
The job preamble records ci_job_name and github.run_attempt. BigQuery parameter handling treats attempt as an integer, like pr_number.
GKE CI labels
scripts/ci/gke.sh
In GitHub Actions, cluster creation adds labels for the CI job name and run attempt. The job name defaults to unknown and is truncated to 63 characters. The attempt defaults to 1. Periods in the labels become hyphens.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: recording job flavor and run attempt in ci-metrics. The raw summary confirms the job record now stores ci_job_name and the run attempt, and the gke.sh labels add flavor and attempt identity. The title is specific and matches the changeset, so the check passes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is detailed and covers the problem, the job-side and cluster-side changes, and a merge prerequisite (ALTER TABLE). It follows the template's main sections: Description, User-facing documentation, Testing and quality, Automated testing, and How I validated my change. The template's 'change me!' placeholders are replaced. Automated testing boxes are unchecked, but the author gives a reason (pass-through fields, exercised by every GHA e2e job). CI results are not marked as inspected. Validation relies on live-data analysis and post-merge checks rather than tests. Overall the description is mostly complete, so this check passes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Align the missing-value fallback with the metrics record.

create_cluster does not require CI_JOB_NAME, so it can run with this variable unset. This code labels the cluster with unknown, while the job preamble records ci_job_name=null; bq_save_job_record then omits that field. The cluster label cannot join to that job record. Require CI_JOB_NAME, or use the same fallback in both producers. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use one label-safe job name value for the cluster label and the metrics record.

The cluster label is truncated to 63 characters, has periods replaced, and is lowercased in scripts/ci/gke.sh. The metrics record stores the raw CI_JOB_NAME in .github/actions/job-preamble/action.yaml. A job name with uppercase letters, periods, or more than 63 characters therefore gets different values in the two sinks. The stackrox-ci-flavor join then fails for that job. Characters such as spaces or / are invalid in Google Cloud label values and can cause cluster creation to fail.

The current workflow job names do not trigger these cases. Define one normalization rule and apply it at both points, so the metrics record and the cluster label hold the same value.
