Description

File-activity-monitoring (FAM) events now carry the Kubernetes/OpenShift user identity behind an interactive session on the same (namespace, pod, container). The primary use case is oc debug: the debug pod itself carries no user identity — the kube-apiserver audit log is the only place it is recorded. kubectl exec and oc rsh are covered by the same mechanism.

How it works:

  • The compliance audit-log reader (master nodes) now forwards pods/exec and pods/attach lifecycle audit events (stages ResponseStarted/ResponseComplete/Panic), parsing the target container from the request URI. The new KubernetesEvent.audit_stage field preserves the stage.
  • Sensor's new interactivesessions.Tracker retains at most one session per (namespace, pod, container):
    • newest session wins — a new session evicts any session already tracked for the container (keeping multiple concurrent sessions and disambiguating between them is a potential future enhancement);
    • a close event destroys the session after a 30 s grace period, so file events still in the pipeline keep their attribution (the majority of sessions end this way);
    • sessions whose close event is never seen fall back to a 6 h TTL;
    • the tracker is capped at 1024 sessions, evicting the earliest-expiring one when full.
  • The FAM pipeline stamps the matched session's identity (effective and authenticated user, audit ID, session type) onto FileAccess.InteractiveSession when a file activity is translated with its enriched process indicator.
  • The detector filters ResponseStarted-stage events, so audit-log policies still fire at most once per request.
  • The file-access alert card in the UI shows the session user when present.

Semantics and limitations (display-only — no policy criteria or search fields):

  • With concurrent sessions on one container, the newest session's user is attributed; file events already in flight from a replaced session's user may be attributed to the new session's user (accepted tradeoff).
  • Enrichment requires audit-log collection to be enabled and an audit policy that logs exec/attach (the OpenShift default policy does). Otherwise events are simply unattributed.
  • Sessions are lost on sensor restart; processes outliving their session by more than the grace period are not attributed.

Note for release notes: audit-log policies targeting PODS_EXEC/PODS_ATTACH now actually receive events (previously these resources were never forwarded from the audit log).

User-facing documentation

  • CHANGELOG.md is updated — suggested entry: "Sensor now enriches file activity events with the Kubernetes user identity of the interactive exec/attach session on the same container, e.g. oc debug sessions"
  • documentation PR not needed (display-only enrichment surfaced in the existing alert card)

Testing and quality

  • the change is production ready: the change is GA, or otherwise the functionality is gated by a feature flag
  • CI results are inspected

Automated testing

  • added unit tests
  • added e2e tests
  • added regression tests
  • added compatibility tests
  • modified existing tests

How I validated my change

  • Synctest-based pipeline enrichment suite (8 cases): single exec/attach session, impersonation, session replacement, close-event grace (attributed within / not past), TTL expiry, wrong container.
  • Tracker suite covers newest-wins replacement, duplicate ResponseStarted reset, cap eviction (mutation-tested: accumulate-revert, evict-largest, and no-op-eviction mutations are all caught; the cap test was verified deterministic over 200 runs).
  • Audit-log reader/sender tests for stage allow-listing and URI parsing; detector filter test.
  • go test -race, go vet, gofmt clean on all touched packages; go generate ./central/graphql/resolvers/ verified byte-for-byte idempotent.

User request: close the gaps in the interactive-session WIP — add
pipeline_test.go coverage exercising enrichment with a real
interactivesessions tracker instead of nil, and verify the remaining
hardening points post-rebase.

The WIP passed a nil tracker in the pipeline tests, so the
translateWithIndicator enrichment path had no end-to-end coverage. Add a
table-driven test that feeds exec/attach audit events into a real
Tracker via Observe, drives a file activity through the pub/sub
enrichment path (inside a synctest bubble so the tracker TTL can be
exercised deterministically), and asserts the resulting
FileAccess.InteractiveSession. Cases: single exec/attach session
attributed (incl. impersonated user reported as effective user), two
concurrent sessions refused as ambiguous, session ended by
ResponseComplete not attributed, session expired by TTL not attributed,
and a session on a different container not attributed.

The existing nil-tracker tests are kept via a newTestPipelineWithTracker
helper. Also verified post-rebase (no code change needed):
sessionTracker.Observe only runs when Sensor is online, all
NewService/NewFileSystemPipeline call sites pass the tracker, and the
proto Next Tag comments are consistent (no policy/search gotags on the
new display-only fields).

…eriod

Previously, a session was removed from the tracker as soon as its
ResponseComplete (or Panic) event was observed. File events can still be
buffered in the pipeline at that moment (e.g. awaiting process-indicator
enrichment), so deleting the session immediately lost their interactive
session attribution.

Closed sessions are now retained for 30 seconds (measured from the
observation of the closing event, since audit events are delivered
near-real-time) and remain full match candidates: they still count toward
the exactly-one ambiguity rule and toward the session cap. A duplicate
ResponseStarted resets the session to active, and duplicate close events
merely refresh the grace window.

User request: "Retain closed interactive sessions for a grace period (30 s)
in the Sensor session tracker."

… closed flag

Apply the review fixes for the closed-session grace period (372b603):

- Add TestTrackerDuplicateResponseStartedResetsClosedSession. Review
mutation testing (M2) showed the suite could not catch a regression in
addLocked's refresh path; the new test closes that gap and fails under
  the same mutation.
- Remove the write-only session.closed field: it was never read and the
closed/active distinction is carried entirely by expiresAt, so an
implementation without it is behaviorally identical. closeLocked now
only updates the grace expiry; keeping the field for explicitness was
considered and rejected because it suggested Match filters on it.
- Reduce TestTracker to the basic lifecycle with a single within-grace
sanity check after close; the past-grace expiry assertion moved out
  since TestTrackerClosedSessionMatchesDuringGraceButNotAfter owns it.
- Give the two pipeline grace cases distinct audit IDs (audit-exec-8/9;
the suggested 6/7 are already used by other cases in the table).

User request: "Apply review fixes for the closed-session grace-period
change: add the missing duplicate-ResponseStarted reset test, remove the
write-only closed field, deduplicate TestTracker, and give the two new
pipeline cases distinct audit IDs."

Product decisions for the interactive-session tracker that attributes
file activity to the k8s user of an exec/attach session:

- Raise the fallback TTL from 5 minutes to 6 hours. Streaming exec and
attach sessions have no lease renewal, and real sessions (e.g.
oc debug) routinely outlast 5 minutes, so the old TTL could drop
attribution for long-running sessions. The TTL only applies when no
close event is ever seen; close events remain the primary destruction
  path.
- Keep the 30s closed-session grace period unchanged: a close event
(ResponseComplete/Panic) destroys the session promptly in the
majority of cases, after briefly retaining it for file events still
  in the pipeline.
- Replace the ambiguity semantics for same-key sessions: a new
ResponseStarted evicts any session already tracked for the container,
so the newest session wins and is immediately matchable. Retaining
multiple concurrent sessions per container and disambiguating
attribution between them is a potential future enhancement.
- At the session cap, evict the earliest-expiring session instead of
dropping the new one. With a 6h TTL the old drop-new policy could
  silently block new sessions for hours on exec-heavy clusters;
evicting the smallest-expiresAt entry preferentially removes
closed/grace-expiring sessions and never blocks a new session.

Also inject maxSessions into the test constructor (closes an old
review gap) so cap eviction is testable.

User request: implement the fix brief in /root/tasks/06-fix-brief.md
(6-hour session TTL, newest-session-wins eviction, keep close-event
destruction).

Code partially generated by AI.
The first half of TestTrackerEvictsOldestSessionAtCap observed pod-1 and
pod-2 in a single Observe batch under the frozen test clock, so both
sessions got identical expiresAt. The cap-eviction tie-break keeps the
first-encountered entry on equal expiries, and the iteration order of
the outer map is randomized by the runtime, so the assertion that pod-1
is the evicted one failed on roughly 1 in 8 runs (~12%, 21/200 in the
review's flake hunt).

Advance the fake clock by one second between observing the two sessions
(the now closure captures the variable by reference), so pod-1's session
is strictly the earliest-expiring one and the eviction is deterministic.
This also makes the first half directionally meaningful: with the equal
expiries it passed even under an evict-largest mutation (Before and
After are both false on ties), leaving only the second half to pin
eviction direction. An order-agnostic count-based assertion was
considered and rejected in review in favor of pinning the oldest.

Also state the accepted tradeoff of newest-session-wins explicitly in
the addLocked comment: file events already in flight from the evicted
session's user (closed-in-grace or still active) are attributed to the
new session's user, until multi-session disambiguation is implemented.

User request: "Fix the flaky cap-eviction test per the review's
preferred option (strictly ordered expiries via clock advance) and
spell out the accepted misattribution tradeoff in the addLocked
comment" (fix brief in /root/tasks/08-fix-brief.md).

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • File activity details can show Kubernetes session attribution, including the actor, session type, and attribution confidence.
    • Kubernetes exec and attach audit events are associated with file activity when a matching session is available, including activity during a short period after a session closes.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Interactive audit events are captured across their lifecycle, while events at the request-received stage are excluded.
    • Response-started events are excluded from audit-log detection, preventing them from generating alerts.

The change adds Kubernetes exec and attach audit-event handling, tracks interactive sessions, and associates matching session details with file activity. It exposes those details through storage and GraphQL, then displays selected fields in the file access details view.

Changes: Interactive Session Attribution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Audit event conversion and filtering
proto/storage/kube_event.proto, compliance/collection/auditlog/*, sensor/common/detector/*
Audit conversion maps pod exec and attach subresources, extracts container and command values from request URIs, and preserves audit stage. Filtering accepts interactive lifecycle stages, while detection excludes ResponseStarted events.
Session tracking and sensor wiring
sensor/common/interactivesessions/*, sensor/common/compliance/*, sensor/kubernetes/sensor/sensor.go
A tracker records exec and attach sessions by namespace, pod, and container. It applies session expiration, closed-session grace periods, and capacity limits. The compliance service observes incoming audit events, and the Kubernetes sensor passes the tracker to the service and filesystem pipeline.
File activity attribution
sensor/common/filesystem/pipeline/*, proto/storage/file_access.proto
The pipeline matches file activity to a retained session using process namespace, pod, and container details. Matching activity receives the session type, audit ID, authenticated and effective users, confidence, and match basis. Tests cover replacement, expiration, grace periods, and container mismatches.
Session details in GraphQL and UI
central/graphql/resolvers/generated.go, ui/apps/platform/src/types/fileAccess.proto.ts, ui/apps/platform/src/Containers/Violations/Details/FileAccessCardContent.tsx
GraphQL resolves interactive-session fields. The file access details view displays the effective user, session type, confidence, and match basis.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(sensor): enrich file activity with exec/attach session user" matches the main change. The PR adds Kubernetes user identity from interactive exec and attach sessions to file-activity events. The change spans the sensor, compliance audit-log reader, storage protos, GraphQL resolvers, and UI, so the title covers the primary change but not every part of it. The title is specific and concise, and it follows a conventional commit style.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the required content for this change. It explains the purpose (identity for oc debug, kubectl exec, and oc rsh sessions) and the mechanism (audit-log forwarding, the session tracker, FAM pipeline enrichment, detector filtering, and UI display). It also lists semantics and limitations, a release-note note, and validation details. The template sections are mostly present. Several template items are unchecked or incomplete: the CHANGELOG entry is not marked done, the production-readiness box (GA or feature flag) is unchecked, CI inspection is unchecked, e2e/regression/compatibility tests are not added, and the template placeholder text "change me!" remains in the Description and How I validated sections. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes. The author should resolve the open items before merge.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 15.38% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 13 functions across 16 files.

Nitpick Avoid global pruning in Match.

Avoid global pruning in Match.

Match runs for each translated file activity and scans up to 1,024 sessions while holding Tracker.mutex. This adds avoidable O(1024) work and can extend contention with Observe, although the inspected code does not establish a material throughput impact. Keep this as an optional optimization. Observe already performs global pruning before cap checks and eviction.

Proposed fix
-	t.pruneExpiredLocked()
-	sessions := t.sessions[key{namespace: namespace, pod: pod, container: container}]

+ delete(sessions, auditID)

Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift

Any process in the container is attributed to the exec/attach user with hard-coded "high" confidence.

Match keys only on namespace, pod, and container. interactiveSession then sets Confidence: "high" (line 242). Nothing checks that the process that touched the file belongs to the exec or attach session. While a session is active, every file event in that container gets the human user. This includes the application's main process and other workloads. An active session can last up to six hours, or 30 seconds after close.

Alert viewers then see a Kubernetes actor for activity that this user did not perform. The file_access.proto comment says the session is "unambiguously associated". The tracker does not guarantee that.

Fix the attribution in one of these ways:

  • Restrict attribution to processes in the session's process lineage.
  • Lower the confidence value (for example "low") and change the UI label to "Possible Kubernetes actor".

If the first option is not feasible now, apply the second.

Minimal mitigation
- Confidence: "high",
+ Confidence: "low", // container-level match only; the process is not verified

Also change the proto comment so it does not claim an unambiguous association.

127 - 131:
Update interactiveSession to use low confidence for container-level matches,
since Match does not verify that the file-event process belongs to the session.
Change the corresponding UI label to “Possible Kubernetes actor” and revise the
