Description

CI plumbing to run the QA e2e suite on dual-mode (IPv6-primary) OpenShift/AWS clusters, paired with the openshift/release job config (branch davdhacs/ocp-aws-dual-ipv6-qa-e2e).

  • OCP e2e jobs on AWS: select an AWS-valid worker instance type in begin.sh, and match the openshift- CLUSTER_FLAVOR_VARIANT prefix used by the dual-mode cluster names in ocp_qa_e2e_tests.py
  • runtime detection of the cluster's primary IP family (isIPv6PrimaryServiceNetwork) in the QA orchestrator manager
  • NetworkFlowTest: use TCP6-LISTEN on IPv6-primary clusters (socat's TCP-LISTEN binds the IPv4 wildcard only, so connections are refused and no flow is recorded)
  • IntegrationsTest: skip the mailserver subtest on IPv6-primary clusters (the mock MailServer does not accept IPv6 connections)

Central is exposed via a Route (LOAD_BALANCER=route in the job config), so no LoadBalancer-Service patching is needed.

User-facing documentation

Testing and quality

  • the change is production ready: the change is GA, or otherwise the functionality is gated by a feature flag
  • CI results are inspected

Automated testing

  • added unit tests
  • added e2e tests
  • added regression tests
  • added compatibility tests
  • modified existing tests

How I validated my change

The groovy changes are byte-identical to the versions validated on the dual-stack-e2e branch, where the QA e2e suite passed on both dual-mode flavors (IPv6-primary and IPv4-primary) of OCP-on-AWS clusters, including rehearsals of the paired release job. This branch carries only the QA-relevant subset.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated CI worker sizing and workload identity setup based on the selected cloud provider.
    • Updated route-based load balancer configuration to use the native route exposure setting.
    • CI can now install Roxie from a selected pull request instead of the pinned release.
    • Data retrieval requests now have time limits and retry attempts.
  • Tests
    • Updated network-flow tests to support IPv6 primary service networks.
    • Email integration tests now skip runs on IPv6-primary networks, where the mock mail server cannot accept IPv6 connections.

CI now selects worker-node types and configures workload identity based on cloud-provider values. Backend tests detect IPv6-primary service networks and adapt their behavior. The route load-balancer setting patches a different Roxie field. When ROXIE_PR is set, the installer builds and installs that pull request’s head commit. Central requests now have timeouts and retries.

Changes: Cloud-provider CI setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider-specific CI conditions
.openshift-ci/begin.sh, scripts/ci/jobs/ocp_qa_e2e_tests.py
For non-VM-scanning OCP 4 jobs, AWS selects m5.2xlarge; GCP and other values select e2-standard-8. Workload identity setup matches OpenShift variants unless CLOUD_PROVIDER is aws; an unset value defaults to gcp.

IPv6-aware backend tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and handle IPv6-primary networks
qa-tests-backend/src/main/groovy/orchestratormanager/Kubernetes.groovy, qa-tests-backend/src/test/groovy/IntegrationsTest.groovy, qa-tests-backend/src/test/groovy/NetworkFlowTest.groovy
isIPv6PrimaryServiceNetwork() checks whether the default namespace’s kubernetes Service ClusterIP contains a colon. The email integration test skips on IPv6-primary networks. NetworkFlowTest uses TCP6-LISTEN on IPv6-primary networks and TCP-LISTEN otherwise.

Route load-balancer exposure

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set route exposure
tests/e2e/lib-compat.sh
For LOAD_BALANCER=route, the script patches .central.exposure to "route" instead of enabling the nested route field.

Roxie pull request installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and install the pull request commit
scripts/roxie.sh
When ROXIE_PR is set, the installer resolves the PR head SHA and reuses an executable only if its stamp matches. Otherwise, it clones the repository, checks out the SHA, builds ./cmd, and records the SHA. The PR path returns without installing the pinned release.

Central request timeouts and retries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set request limits
scripts/grab-data-from-central.sh
call_curl now uses a 30-second connection timeout, a 120-second total timeout, and up to three retries with a 2-second delay, within a 240-second retry window.

Match the intended openshift- prefix.

'openshift' in ... also matches values such as foo-openshift-bar. This enables workload-identity setup for variants outside the intended openshift-... family. Use startswith("openshift-").

Restrict workload-identity setup to GCP.

SETUP_WORKLOAD_IDENTITIES=true invokes GCP-specific setup. Because CLOUD_PROVIDER accepts unknown values, an unsupported provider can enter this path and cause invalid GCP configuration or setup failure.

Keep the route setting in the Central CR spec.

The pinned roxie version is 0.4.15. Its native central.exposure parser accepts only none and loadbalancer; route returns unknown exposure: "route". The route deployment therefore fails while parsing this config, before the operator can create spec.central.exposure.route. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Restore the nested CR patch, or update roxie and add explicit support for route before using this field.

Propagate PR installation failures.

If lookup, checkout, or build fails, install_roxie_from_pr returns nonzero. Line 70 then returns success anyway. The wrapper can run an old executable or attempt to run a missing one. Return the installer’s status so main stops before executing Roxie. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Authenticate the PR lookup when GITHUB_TOKEN is available.

This request is unauthenticated even though the release-download path supports GITHUB_TOKEN. GitHub limits unauthenticated REST requests to 60 per hour per originating IP. Repeated CI jobs can exhaust that shared limit and block PR installation, including cache hits that still perform the lookup. Pass the token header when available. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Invalidate the PR stamp when the release replaces Roxie.

If a PR build is followed by a pinned-release install, the release replaces install_path but leaves its PR stamp. When the same ROXIE_PR is selected again, this check accepts the release executable as the PR build. Remove the stamp when installing the release, or verify the executable’s identity before reusing it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Cap retry time per URL.

call_curl runs inside the per-policy loop. Without --retry-max-time, one retryable URL can consume about 486 seconds across four attempts and three delays. Multiple policies can therefore make the Central data subprocess exceed its 30-minute timeout.

Add --retry-max-time 120. This caps the retry window for each URL while --max-time continues to bound each individual attempt. It reduces the per-URL retry duration but does not impose a 30-minute cap on the entire policy loop.

Review comment at @scripts/grab-data-from-central.sh at line 19:
Add a 120-second retry window limit to the curl invocation in call_curl. Keep
--max-time 120 to bound each attempt and preserve the existing retry count and
delay; this should limit retries per URL without imposing a timeout on the full
policy loop.

Buffer each response before passing it to jq.

If a request times out after emitting part of its body, curl cannot remove those bytes from the pipe before retrying. The successful response is appended to them, so jq can reject the result and the diagnostic artifact is lost. Write curl output to a temporary file, then pass it to jq after a successful transfer. Review comment at @scripts/grab-data-from-central.sh at line 21:
Update the curl request flow around --retry in the data-fetch script to write
each response to a temporary file, then pass that file to jq only after curl
succeeds. Preserve the existing retry settings and ensure the temporary file is
cleaned up after processing.
