Skipping CI for Draft Pull Request.
If you want CI signal for your change, please convert it to an actual PR.
You can still manually trigger a test run with /test all

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Monitoring
    • Added metrics that report vulnerability bundle import outcomes by source and status, linked to the downloaded bundle’s SHA-256 hash.
    • Update results distinguish successful, skipped, and failed imports, including when an update encounters errors.

The vulnerability updater now hashes each downloaded ZIP and tracks per-source import outcomes by archive digest in a Prometheus gauge. It distinguishes skipped bundles from successful imports when counting updates. Tests check digest labels, gauge values, and source statuses after partial failures.

Changes: Vulnerability bundle import outcomes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Archive digest and metric setup
scanner/matcher/updater/vuln/updater.go
The updater hashes the downloaded ZIP and rewinds it before processing. A new digest resets tracked results, and allowed sources are initialized as pending.
Bundle outcome tracking
scanner/matcher/updater/vuln/updater.go, scanner/matcher/updater/vuln/updater_test.go
Bundle updates distinguish success, skipped, and failure outcomes. The updater records source status and counts only successful imports. The partial-failure test checks the metric labels and values.

The new per-source import metric can show a stale "pending" status when recording the update time fails before bundles are processed. The import error is still reported, so data handling is unaffected. Only the dashboard status is misleading, making this a small follow-up rather than a merge blocker.

Finalize pending bundle results when pre-registration fails.

GetOrSetLastVulnerabilityUpdate can return before bundle processing. The failing source, and other sources already marked pending, then keep that status for the current ZIP digest. Update returns the error, but it does not finalize the gauge. A later run can correct the status only if it processes the same digest; a new digest only resets the gauge.

This is an observability-only issue, and the early return predates this PR. Lower the severity to minor and finalize all pending sources before returning.

🐛 Suggested fix
 		if _, err := u.metadataStore.GetOrSetLastVulnerabilityUpdate(ctx, f.Name, prevTime); err != nil {
+			for _, pendingBundle := range bundles {
+				pendingSource := strings.TrimSuffix(path.Base(pendingBundle.Name), ".json.zst")
+				if u.sourceResults[pendingSource] == "pending" {
+					u.setSourceResult(zipSHA, pendingSource, "failure")
+				}
+			}
 			return false, fmt.Errorf("setting last update-time for bundle %s: %w", f.Name, err)
 		}
