…former Problem: Sensor's compliance operator handler hardcodes ScanSetting roles to [master, worker]. On OpenShift clusters with custom MachineConfigPools (e.g. an "infra" pool), nodes without the "worker" label are never scanned because Compliance Operator maps each role to nodes labeled node-role.kubernetes.io/<role>. Solution: derive ScanSetting roles from the cluster's MachineConfigPools instead. The handler owns a single dynamic informer for MachineConfigPools (OpenShift-only; started only once MCPs are confirmed listable, so non-OpenShift clusters stay a no-op). Roles are read from the informer's cache at create/update/sync time, and the informer's Add/Update/Delete handlers coalesce into a non-blocking trigger that the handler's existing single-writer run() loop drains to reconcile already-created ScanSettings. This is reactive (driven by MCP events the informer naturally receives), not a periodic poll. Gated by ROX_COMPLIANCE_AUTODISCOVER_NODE_ROLES (default true); any failure (non-OpenShift, API error, unsynced cache) falls back to master+worker without blocking or crashing the handler. Sensor-only change; no proto/API/Central/UI changes. Code reused and adapted from an earlier poll-based prototype of the same feature (role derivation, fallback policy, reconcile/patch logic) replacing its ticker with the MCP informer as the trigger source. Partially generated with AI assistance (OpenCode).
Addresses an independent code review of the adaptive node-role discovery change (ROX_COMPLIANCE_AUTODISCOVER_NODE_ROLES): - MAJOR 1: startMCPRoleInformer() now runs in its own goroutine from Start() (mirroring `go m.run()`) instead of blocking it. The OpenShift probe is also short-circuited (see MAJOR 1/MINOR 5 below), so this fixes both the worst-case ~40s startup delay and the ~3s wasted on every non-OpenShift install. - MAJOR 1 / MINOR 5: added probeMachineConfigPools(), a single non-retried List call. A NotFound (the common non-OpenShift case) is detected immediately instead of being retried with exponential backoff; any other error still goes through callWithRetry, since it may be transient. meta.IsNoMatchError is kept but documented as defensive/effectively unreachable for this dynamic client. - MAJOR 2: reconcileNodeRoles now creates the pass-budget context (passCtx) before listing ScanSettings and lists through it, via a new ctx-aware getResourcesInClusterCtx/callWithRetryCtx pair (parallel to the existing callWithRetryWithOnConflictCallbackCtx pattern), so the budget bounds the list too, not just the per-ScanSetting updates. Added TestReconcileNodeRolesBoundsSlowList to cover a slow/retried LIST specifically. - MAJOR 3: mcpLister/mcpInformerSynced are now guarded by a new mcpMu RWMutex with getMCPLister/getMCPInformerSynced/setMCPInformer accessors, since startMCPRoleInformer (MAJOR 1) now writes them from a separate goroutine than the one(s) reading them (run(), via discoverNodeRoles/waitForMCPCacheSync). - MAJOR 4: HandlerTestSuite now Stop()s the handler in TearDownTest (one per Start()'d handler) instead of once in TearDownSuite, which was leaking a run() goroutine and a real MCP informer per test. - MINOR 6: added a comment on handleSyncScanCfgRequest documenting the accepted trade-off that its goroutine can race reconcileNodeRoles on the same ScanSettings, converging via the existing conflict-retry path. No re-architecture, as requested. - MINOR 7: added a trivial guard in discoverNodeRoles skipping a derived role equal to Compliance Operator's reserved "@ALL" role. - NIT 8: trimmed the fallbackDefaultNodeRoles comment to drop the env-var-name restatement. Verified: go build ./sensor/..., go vet on the package, gofmt -l on changed files (empty), and go test ./sensor/kubernetes/complianceoperator/... -race -count=1 (pass, 5x in a row). Partially generated with AI assistance.
…ncile found in live testing Live testing on ga-ocp-cron (ROX-37596) confirmed the reactive reconcile correctly re-lists and patches ACS-managed ScanSettings within ~1s of a MachineConfigPool add/update/delete, but there was no log line anywhere on the success path to confirm this happened short of diffing ScanSetting state before/after. Every other mutation this handler makes (e.g. reconcileCreateOrUpdateResource) already logs at Debug for this reason. Added 2 Debugf lines, mirroring that existing convention: one when the informer-fed roleReconcileTrigger actually fires in run(), one when reconcileScanSettingRoles decides a ScanSetting's roles differ from desired and is about to patch it. Default (Info) log level is unaffected; this is purely for troubleshooting via MODULE_LOGLEVELS=kubernetes/complianceoperator=Debug. Verified live: with this logging, a MachineConfigPool add/delete now produces a trigger log line followed by a roles-diff log line ~15ms later, and 5 status-only MCP patches (no role change) produced zero trigger lines, confirming the onMCPUpdate skip-unchanged-role logic has no observable churn either. Note: AI-generated change, part of live-testing session for ROX-37596.

Two issues surfaced while reviewing the node-role defaulting design:
1. Zero-roles clobber. The old (roles, error) contract folded "discovery
disabled", "found nothing", and "informer unavailable" into one value.
A synced-but-empty cache was returned as a successful fallback, so an
update or reconcile overwrote existing custom roles (e.g. "infra") with
master+worker - the exact regression resolveNodeRolesForUpdate existed to
prevent. Replaced with an explicit nodeRoleDiscovery{outcome} classified
once by discoverDefaultNodeRoles and interpreted per caller (rolesForCreate
/ rolesForUpdate / reconcile). Only Discovered and Disabled are
authoritative; Empty and Unavailable preserve existing roles.
2. Reconcile passes skipped or cut short were never re-run until the next
MachineConfigPool change, which may never come. Added:
- re-queue when the per-pass budget runs out (known remaining work);
- a periodic safety-net tick (ROX_COMPLIANCE_NODE_ROLE_RECONCILE_INTERVAL,
default 10m, clamped to 2m) as a stateless catch-all, chosen over
per-error exponential backoff since reconcile is idempotent/convergent;
- a one-shot reconcile once compliance becomes ready, closing the startup
race where sync-time informer events are dropped before readiness.
Empty is deliberately not re-queued: it is a stable cluster state, not a
transient error, so retrying it would spin.
Also wrap the MachineConfigPool probe error (wrapcheck) and use
pkg/sync instead of stdlib sync (roxvet).
User request: investigate the defaulting design smell, refactor to a cleaner
model preserving roles on zero-roles, then add re-queue on budget exhaustion,
a configurable safety-net ticker, and an on-ready trigger.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winKeep MCP discovery retryable after startup retries are exhausted.
If the MCP probe remains unavailable for the bounded retry window,
startMCPRoleInformerreturns without settingmcpLister.reconcileOnceReadyand the periodic tick only request reconciliation; they do not restart informer setup. Later reconciliation sees an unavailable informer and skips discovery, so MCP roles remain undiscovered after the API recovers.Keep the startup goroutine alive and retry informer setup until the handler stops. Description
Sensor's compliance handler creates Compliance Operator
ScanSettingCRs with a hardcodedroles: [master, worker]. On OpenShift clusters with customMachineConfigPools (e.g. a dedicatedinfrapool whose nodes don't carry theworkerlabel), nodes in those pools are never scanned, because Compliance Operator maps each ScanSetting role to nodes labelednode-role.kubernetes.io/<role>.This change makes Sensor discover node roles from
MachineConfigPools and keep ACS-managed ScanSettings in sync as cluster topology changes:MachineConfigPoolinformer (built from its existing client), started off the critical path in a goroutine fromStart(), stopped via the handler's stop signal. OpenShift-gated: if the MCP CRD is absent, the feature is a no-op and ScanSettings getmaster+worker.run()loop to re-list ACS-managed ScanSettings and patch any whose roles differ (order-insensitive, idempotent). Chatty MCP status updates are filtered out (the update handler only triggers when the derived role changes).ROX_COMPLIANCE_AUTODISCOVER_NODE_ROLES(defaulttrue). When off:master+worker, no informer, no reconcile.Sensor-only: no proto/API/Central/UI changes. Existing sensor RBAC (
stackrox:view-clusteralready grantsget/watch/liston all resources) covers MCP access, so no chart change is needed.Excalidraw link

ef271537c9(current HEAD) on two real OpenShift 4 clusters (Compliance Operator v1.10.0):ga-ocp-cron(Central+Sensor) andga-ocp-cron-2(secured-cluster-only, registered to the same Central), via a custom sensor image built from the branch and deployed to both. ACS scan configs created through the Central v2 API.Baseline (no regression) — scan config with no custom pools on either cluster:
Reactive discovery (the core change) — on
ga-ocp-cron-2, relabeled an existing workernode-role.kubernetes.io/infra=""and created aninfraMachineConfigPool, without touching the scan config or restarting Sensor:MCP created → ScanSetting patched in ~10ms, no Sensor restart. Deleting the MCP reconciles the role back out again the same way.
Cold start — reverted a ScanSetting's roles to
[master, worker]by hand with theinfraMCP already in place, restarted Sensor, confirmed it self-heals on startup via the same path (not just the reactive one):Kill switch (
ROX_COMPLIANCE_AUTODISCOVER_NODE_ROLES=false) — created a new scan config with theinfraMCP still present; got static[master, worker], confirming the flag isn't bypassed:Re-enabling the flag afterward picked this ScanSetting up on the next reconcile pass and corrected it to
