Description

New roxvet static analysis linter (authfuncoverride) that enforces a specific structure on methods named AuthFuncOverride on pointer receivers:

  • Signature: func (*T) AuthFuncOverride(ctx context.Context, fullMethodName string) (context.Context, error)
  • Body: exactly return ctx, <authorizer>.Authorized(ctx, fullMethodName)
  • An extensible AuthorizerVerifier hook; UserAuthorizerVerifier restricts the authorizer expression to known safe constructors.

Supported leaf constructors (no argument validation needed):

  • user.WithRole, user.With, user.Authenticated (pkg/grpc/authz/user)
  • allow.Anonymous (pkg/grpc/authz/allow)
  • deny.Everyone (pkg/grpc/authz/deny)
  • or.ScannerV4 (pkg/grpc/authz/or)
  • idcheck.CentralOnly, SensorsOnly, SensorRegistrantsOnly, ScannerOnly, ScannerV4IndexerOnly, ScannerV4MatcherOnly, CollectorOnly, AdmissionControlOnly (pkg/grpc/authz/idcheck)

Supported composite constructors (arguments recursively validated):

  • or.Or(...), and.And(...) — variadic, all args must be valid
  • or.SensorOr(a), or.ScannerOr(a) — single arg must be valid
  • perrpc.FromMap(m) — all map keys must be valid

Named package-level variables are traced to their initializer; inline call expressions are checked directly. Cross-package variables are conservatively rejected.

AI-assisted change.

User-facing documentation

Testing and quality

  • the change is production ready: the change is GA, or otherwise the functionality is gated by a feature flag
  • CI results are inspected

Automated testing

  • added unit tests

This is a new roxvet linter to enforce a given structure to the gRPC service authorizers (especially in central) and help ensure that these authorizers only need specific elements from the context and are not using others (currently allowed use is authn.IdentityFromContext and disallowed use would be sac.GlobalAccessScopeChecker).

How I validated my change

  • Added unit tests run successfully.
  • Successful run on the existing codebase.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a static analysis check for authorization override methods. It validates method signatures and implementation structure, and can flag authorizers that do not meet configured constraints.
    • Added built-in checks for recognized user authorization patterns.

Adds and registers a Go analyzer for AuthFuncOverride methods. It checks method signatures and bodies, and can apply a configurable verifier to the authorizer expression. Tests cover supported authorizers and expected diagnostics.

Changes: AuthFuncOverride analysis

Layer / File(s) Summary
Override method checks
tools/roxvet/analyzers/authfuncoverride/analyzer.go
The analyzer checks pointer receivers, required parameter and result types, and a single return that passes the original context and method name to Authorized.
Authorizer expression validation
tools/roxvet/analyzers/authfuncoverride/verifiers.go, tools/roxvet/analyzers/authfuncoverride/testdata/src/c/c.go, tools/roxvet/analyzers/authfuncoverride/testdata/src/github.com/stackrox/rox/pkg/grpc/authz/*/*.go, tools/roxvet/analyzers/authfuncoverride/testdata/src/github.com/stackrox/rox/pkg/grpc/authz/authz.go
The verifier checks supported authorizer constructors, nested authorizers, map keys, and package-level variable initializers. Fixtures exercise accepted and rejected expressions.

Registers the analyzer with roxvet. Tests and fixtures cover valid and invalid method signatures and bodies, ignored standalone functions, and a custom verifier.

Existing service methods fail the newly enabled roxvet check, so the supported lint workflow should be fixed before merging. The optional authorizer check also needs to reject mutable variables.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Move the runtime reflection helpers out of the linter package.

IsWithRole and IsAllowedAuthorizer are documented as "not in the static linter", yet they live in the linter package. Because of them, the roxvet binary imports the real pkg/grpc/authz/* packages, including their dependency trees and any init side effects. The allowedConcreteTypes initializer also calls those constructors at startup. The static verifier does not need any of this, because it compares package paths only. Move these helpers into a package under pkg/grpc/authz (or a test helper) so the linter stays dependency-free.

Fix or exempt existing AuthFuncOverride methods before enabling this analyzer.

Existing methods in sensor/common/filesystem/service/service_impl.go, sensor/common/deployment/service_impl.go, and scanner/services/matcher.go do not match the required single-statement body. The registered analyzer will report these methods, which can fail the roxvet CI step.

Fix the affected methods or exclude them from this analyzer before merging.

Reject mutable authorizer variables in UserAuthorizerVerifier.

When NewAnalyzer(UserAuthorizerVerifier) analyzes an identifier, the verifier checks only the matching var initializer. A local or package-level variable can therefore start with an allowed constructor, be reassigned to a custom authorizer, and still pass without a diagnostic.

Restrict accepted identifiers to unexported package-level *types.Var values. Reject any same-package assignment, increment/decrement, or address-taking use. A same-package scan cannot detect writes to an exported variable from another package, so exported variables must be rejected or analyzed across package boundaries. Add fixtures for package-level and local reassignment.

The registered roxvet analyzer currently uses NewAnalyzer(nil), so this is a false negative in the configurable verifier, not a current roxvet security bypass.
