The two most common scenarios are:

• there's no tag the latest commit: the feature tells you you should indeed create a new one and links to the list of new commits
• there's a tag, but no release: if the data isn't cached, the feature will fail to appear

I'm thinking it needs a more specific feature: compare selected tag with the selected branch. But sounds difficult compared to the rarity of the situation.
