Description

Gives the ClusterObjectDeployment (COD) controller its first real behavior, building on the skeleton from #3032. The COD API types were introduced in #3018.

The controller now:

  1. Creates a new ClusterObjectSet (COS) revision when the template changes (or when no active revision exists), owned by the COD.
  2. Reports rollout progress via the COD's single Progressing condition.

It lives in the object-controller binary and is experimental-only (//go:build !standard, experimental-channel CRD).

Design

  • Change detection uses a template-hash label (olm.operatorframework.io/template-hash), not an SSA dry-run diff. A SHA-256 digest of the template is stored on each COS; the latest active revision's label is compared to the current template. This honors the CRD contract "any template change → new revision" — including changes to COS-mutable fields such as progressionProbes, which an SSA-diff approach would silently mutate in place rather than rev.
  • Revision identity is runtime-derived from spec.group (= COD name) + spec.revision; child COS are named <cod>-<revision>.
  • Completion is keyed off the COS status.completedAt (set-once, immutable), so a later availability regression does not un-complete the rollout.
  • New revisions are created with a plain typed Create (revisions are immutable; AlreadyExists is tolerated for requeue races). No finalizer — owned COS cascade via the controller owner reference.

Out of scope (handled by COS or deferred)

Archival/supersession of older revisions (done today by the COS controller), progress deadlines, revision-history pruning, orphan adoption, and object externalization to Secrets.

Progressing states

Condition Status Reason
New revision needed / just created True NewClusterObjectSetProgressing
Latest revision rolling out True NewClusterObjectSetProgressing
Latest revision completed False NewClusterObjectSetProgressed

Testing

  • Unit (internal/object-controller/controllers): pure-function tests for hashing (incl. a progressionProbes-only change producing a new hash), COS build/defaulting, revision numbering, latest-active selection; and reconcile tests for first-revision creation, no-op-when-unchanged (completed → Progressing False; rolling out → True), new-revision-on-change, new-revision-when-latest-archived, deletion no-op, and AlreadyExists tolerance.
  • E2E (test/e2e/features/cod_rollout.feature, @BoxcutterRuntime): initial rollout → Progressing=False; template change → revision 2 Ready → Progressing=False; metadata-only re-apply (unchanged template) → no new revision. Adds a Godog step to assert a condition directly on a ClusterObjectDeployment.
  • make generate / make manifests produce no diff (no API/RBAC changes); golangci-lint, go vet, gofmt clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • ClusterObjectDeployments now automatically create and manage revisioned ClusterObjectSets.
    • Template changes trigger new revisions, while unchanged or metadata-only updates avoid unnecessary revisions.
    • Revision numbering remains consistent, including when previous revisions are archived.
    • Revisions include template tracking to support reliable change detection.
    • Deployment progress conditions now reflect revision creation and rollout completion.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Deleted deployments are ignored safely during reconciliation.
    • Existing or conflicting revision names are handled without overwriting unrelated objects.
    • Revision creation uses collision protection to preserve existing resources.

Add the pure helpers the ClusterObjectDeployment controller will use to roll
out revisions: templateHash (stable digest of the template, truncated to fit a
label value), collisionProtectionOrDefault, nextRevisionNumber,
latestActiveRevision, and buildClusterObjectSet. Add the template-hash label
constant and a Scheme field on the reconciler. No reconcile behavior yet.

The ClusterObjectDeployment controller now lists ClusterObjectSet revisions by
group, detects template changes via the template-hash label, and creates a new
Active revision (owned by the COD) when the template changed or no active
revision exists. It reports rollout progress on the Progressing condition,
keying completion off the latest revision's completedAt. Reconcile is a no-op
for a deployment under deletion (owned revisions cascade via the owner ref), and
an AlreadyExists on create is tolerated. Wire the manager Scheme into the
reconciler.

Add a Godog step asserting a condition (type/status/reason) directly on a
ClusterObjectDeployment, mirroring the existing ClusterObjectSet step. Enables
cod_<feature>.feature scenarios to assert the Progressing condition.

Add experimental (@BoxcutterRuntime) e2e scenarios for the ClusterObjectDeployment
controller: initial revision rollout, a new revision on template change, and no
new revision when the template is unchanged. Asserts the generated
ClusterObjectSet revisions become Ready and the deployment's Progressing
condition reaches NewClusterObjectSetProgressed.

The scenario previously applied the ClusterObjectDeployment only once, so the
"no new revision" assertion passed without ever driving the controller's
idempotency path. Re-apply with a metadata-only annotation change: this bumps
the deployment's resourceVersion (forcing a reconcile) while leaving the
template hash unchanged, so the absence of a second revision now exercises the
real no-op path.

📝 Walkthrough

The ClusterObjectDeployment reconciler now creates and selects ClusterObjectSet revisions from deployment templates. It records template hashes, assigns revision numbers, updates Progressing status, and includes unit and end-to-end rollout coverage.

Changes: ClusterObjectDeployment Rollout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Revision identity and construction
internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller.go, internal/shared/labels/labels.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller_internal_test.go
The controller hashes templates, defaults collision protection, numbers revisions, selects active revisions, and builds ClusterObjectSet objects. Tests cover these helpers and the TemplateHashKey label.
Reconciliation and progress conditions
internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller.go, cmd/object-controller/main.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller_test.go
The reconciler handles deletion, lists revisions, creates revisions when required, handles creation errors, and updates Progressing status. Manager setup supplies the scheme. Tests cover revision creation, unchanged and archived revisions, deletion, incomplete revisions, and collisions.
Rollout validation
test/e2e/features/cod_rollout.feature, test/e2e/steps/steps.go
End-to-end scenarios check initial rollout, template changes, unchanged templates, revision readiness, and deployment completion conditions. A step polls conditions by type, status, and reason.

Wait for reconciliation before asserting that revision 2 is absent.

ResourceIsApplied waits only for kubectl apply to finish. The repeated Progressing=False check can match the condition from before the re-apply, and the not-found check returns while ${NAME}-2 is still absent. Tie the absence assertion to a reconciliation signal from the metadata-only re-apply so this scenario detects an incorrect revision creation.

This is a test-coverage gap, not evidence of a current production failure or broken test workflow.

1017-1017: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Require a current-generation condition for COD assertions.

After the template update, waitForCondition checks only the condition type, status, and reason. It can therefore accept the existing Progressing=False condition from revision 1 while the scenario waits for revision 2 to become ready. Require observedGeneration to match the COD resource's current metadata.generation before accepting the condition.

This is a test-coverage gap, not a production defect.

Update the COD assertion flow around waitForCondition to require the condition’s
observedGeneration to equal the resource’s current metadata.generation before
accepting a matching type, status, and reason. Preserve the existing scenario
variable substitution and condition checks while rejecting stale conditions from

New changes are detected. LGTM label has been removed.

createRevision previously tolerated AlreadyExists, which could silently accept a
ClusterObjectSet from a different group squatting the <group>-<revision> name
(the name is a controller convention, not an API-enforced invariant), leaving the
deployment stuck. Match the orb-operator reference and return any create error.
A stale-cache retry on an existing revision number now surfaces as a transient
error and self-heals on the next reconcile once the cache catches up.
