   What i've seen in your code, you can try something like this:

   var request = require('request');
   var zlib    = require('zlib');
   var tar     = require('tar');
   
   var commit = 'b70bf922a1de35722904930c42467e95c889562f';
   var url = 'https://github.com/libgit2/libgit2/tarball/'+ commit;
   var path = __dirname + '/vendor/libgit2-' + commit;
   
   request({ url: url }).pipe(zlib.createUnzip()).pipe(tar.Extract({ path: path }))
   .on('end', function() {
     console.log('Done!');
   });
   

   This is a short code, you can add listeners for other events like error, data ...

   @faceleg - yeah, well done, it works for me to, just had to install cmake and python2 deps for libgit.
