The menu should open next to the avatar, 8px from the right. Not below.
This way, when the left panel is open, the menu should cover the user's display name and therefore not show the username twice.

@americanrefugee apologies for the delay, I broke the padding. New screenshots now added. The space panel ones are changed because everything shifted down by 2px: the user avatar had 1px top and bottom padding from the UA stylesheet which I don't think it should have(?), so I've taken that out, but it means everything has shifted up a little. |
No worries! Thanks for the screenshots. The new user menu position looks good! However, I noticed that announcements / alerts still show some of the user name when the left panel is expanded. 
Can we adjust the position to the left so that the alert covers the name? |
So they completely cover the display name of the user menu when it's expanded. Also down slightly so they're level with the user menu.
