Refs #241.

Problem

test_a_bulk_session_moves_every_event_across_pages fails in CI on current main on every recent run — e.g. nix flake check for main@e1f99237 (run 39090664953) and for a3e87e6 (run 39090489139), in both the id-ci and id-test-unit derivations:

thread 'log_sync::tests::test_a_bulk_session_moves_every_event_across_pages' panicked at src/log_sync.rs:793:10:
called `Result::unwrap()` on an `Err` value: Timeout(30s)

1485 passed, this 1 failed. Small sessions (≤13 events) pass in the same runs; the 210-event session is the one that dies mid-transfer — the initiator's deadline firing and closing the connection is also what a responder sees as the 'connection lost: reset by peer' #241 was filed for.

Cause

The ingest worker formed a batch from whatever try_recv found in the instant it woke. Arrivals are paced by the peer's page reads and the stream, not by the worker, so under a bulk transfer the batch collapsed to a few operations — and every batch is one write transaction (one redb commit + fsync). The receiving side therefore paid a commit for nearly every operation, and ingest throughput, not the transfer, decided whether the session beat its deadline.

Solution

collect_batch now waits out a short grace (5 ms, polled on the blocking worker thread) for more arrivals before committing a batch that is not full, so paced arrivals share one transaction. The wait ends early when the stream closes, so a session's last partial batch is not held back, and a lone arrival is delayed by at most the grace.

Verification

  • 3 new network-free unit tests (paced arrivals coalesce; lone arrival released after the grace; batch capped at INGEST_BATCH) pass, plus store_traits tests: 14/14.
  • cargo check --lib, --lib --no-default-features, --lib --tests ✓; rustfmt clean on the file.
  • The loopback bulk test itself cannot run in the sweep sandbox (UDP is blocked there — even the 13-event session test times out on unmodified code), so the end-to-end confirmation is this PR's nix flake check: the bulk test is the signal. If it still times out with batches coalesced, the bottleneck is elsewhere and the failure stays reproducible for the next step — no retry was added, per the issue.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Incoming identity updates that arrive close together are now processed in groups, while smaller batches continue to complete promptly. This helps handle bursts of updates together without making a lone update wait for additional arrivals before processing. Processing also stops collecting when a batch reaches its limit, so larger bursts can be handled in successive batches.

…er arrival (#241)

The ingest worker formed a batch from whatever try_recv found in the
instant it woke. Arrivals are paced by the peer's page reads and the
stream, so under a bulk transfer the batch collapsed to a few
operations and nearly every operation paid its own write transaction
(one redb commit and fsync each). Small sessions never notice; the
210-event bulk session does: on current main it fails in CI on every
run with the initiator hitting its 30s deadline mid-transfer
(src/log_sync.rs:793, Timeout(30s)) — the same mid-stream death #241
reported as 'connection lost: reset by peer' on the feature stack,
where the retry hid it. When the initiator's deadline fires it closes
the connection, which is the reset the responder sees.

collect_batch now waits out a short grace (5ms, polled on the blocking
worker thread) for more arrivals before committing a batch that is not
full, so paced arrivals share one transaction. The wait ends early
when the stream closes, so a session's last partial batch is not held
back, and a lone arrival is delayed by at most the grace.

Three network-free unit tests cover the collection: paced arrivals
coalesce into one batch, a lone arrival is released after the grace,
and a full batch stops at INGEST_BATCH headers.

📝 Walkthrough

The ingest worker collects queued arrivals and waits briefly for more before ingesting a batch. Collection stops when the grace period expires, the channel closes, or 256 headers are collected. Tests cover paced arrivals, a lone arrival, and the header limit.

Changes: Arrival batching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect and ingest arrival batches
pkgs/id/src/log_sync.rs
collect_batch waits up to 5 ms for arrivals and polls every 250 μs. Each arrival restarts the grace period. Collection stops when the grace period expires, the channel closes, or 256 headers are collected. Refusals do not count toward the limit. ingest_arrivals processes the collected arrivals and counts refusals. Tests cover paced arrivals, a lone arrival, and the 256-header limit.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0c805

An admitted peer can delay ingestion and grow a batch well beyond its intended limit. Cap collected arrivals before merging. The paced-arrivals test also remains vulnerable to scheduling delays.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0c805

An admitted peer can keep rejected operations accumulating outside the bounded arrival queue and delay ingestion of valid headers. Session deadlines and admission checks limit exposure, but the new collector does not impose a fixed limit on retained rejected arrivals.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new collector retains every refused arrival without counting it toward the batch cap. An admitted peer sending body-bearing operations within each idle-grace interval can grow transient batch memory and delay collected valid headers until an idle gap, channel closure or session cancellation. The 256-slot channel limits queued arrivals, not the vector already drained by the worker. Unlike the base implementation, rejected arrivals now accumulate rather than being tallied immediately.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The immediate exposure is the receiving sync session's memory, blocking worker and delayed header ingestion. Enough retained state across sessions could affect the hosting process and other workloads sharing it. The handler creates a task for each accepted bidirectional stream, but effective transport concurrency limits and production exposure were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An admitted peer can send repeated decodable operations with bodies. Each is enqueued as Refused before protocol deduplication, so duplicate suppression does not prevent arrival accumulation. Keeping arrival gaps below the idle grace avoids collection completion without advancing the header cap. This supports a resource-exhaustion path, not a measured service crash or a proven exhaustion threshold.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Admission checks, awaited sends to a bounded channel, a 256-header cap and the serving session's 60-second deadline provide meaningful controls. They do not cap already-collected refusals. Refused bodies never cross the storage boundary, so the traced concern is transient resource retention rather than persistence of rejected data.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Dropping the session releases its arrival senders, allowing eventual collection termination and worker cleanup. This limits continued input after cancellation, but accumulated refusals still require processing and any collected headers may be ingested after the session reports timeout. The PR increases potential retained cleanup work without introducing the underlying detached-worker lifecycle.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give collection an explicit bound covering all retained arrival categories, or tally refusals without retaining one entry per refusal. A non-restarting collection budget could additionally bound header latency while preserving idle-grace coalescing.

Make the paced-arrivals test tolerant of scheduling delays.

The two 2 ms sleeps leave about 1 ms of margin within BATCH_GRACE. If the pacer runs late, collect_batch can correctly return before the third header arrives, and Line 872 fails. Rust does not guarantee that thread::sleep ends at the requested time. Use a test-specific, wider grace period while keeping the production grace at 5 ms. (doc.rust-lang.org)

collect_batch set its grace deadline once, at the first empty poll, and
never restarted it. Any stream paced over more than BATCH_GRACE in total
was cut back to a batch per gap — the exact per-operation write
transactions the grace exists to prevent — once the first 5ms window
lapsed. CI run 39096263946 confirms the effect end to end: the bulk
session still ends in Timeout(30s).

The grace is now an idle wait: each arrival clears the deadline, so
arrivals that keep landing inside the grace of the previous one share
one write transaction however long their run spans.

New regression test paces 8 arrivals 2ms apart (16ms span, over 3x the
grace): it collected a batch of 3 before this change and collects all 8
after. The three existing batch tests still pass.

Pushed 0c80543f: the batch grace is now an idle wait that restarts on each arrival (it was a single 5 ms window from the first gap, so a paced stream fell back to per-operation transactions). New regression test fails before (batch of 3/8) and passes after (8/8); all 4 batch tests green locally. Details on #241. This run also filed #257 for the ENOSPC that killed this PR's id-test leg.

Cap total arrivals in collect_batch.

An admitted peer can send body-bearing operations. The vendored LogSync sender sends each operation with its optional body. Each received body becomes Arrival::Refused.

collect_batch removes arrivals from the bounded channel, so channel capacity does not cap the local Vec. Each refusal resets the idle grace, but only headers count toward INGEST_BATCH. A peer can therefore grow the batch beyond 256 entries and delay valid headers until the refusal stream pauses. The 60-second session deadline limits the duration, but it does not provide the intended collection bound.

CI verdict for head 0c80543f (run 39103176678): inconclusive for the bulk test — see the detailed note on #241. Short version: only id-test-e2e failed (13 Firefox shared-state failures, #229 territory); id-ci was cancelled mid-run by that failure after all four batch-collection tests passed but before test_a_bulk_session_moves_every_event_across_pages reported. Needs one clean re-run for the bulk verdict.

Sweep update (2026-10-18 07:00 CDT run): re-ran the flake check for PR #255 head 0c80543f — gh run rerun 39103176678 --failed, now run attempt 2, status in_progress at trigger time.

Why: attempt 1 was inconclusive for the bulk test — id-test-e2e failed first (13 Firefox shared-state failures, #229) and id-ci was cancelled before test_a_bulk_session_moves_every_event_across_pages reported (the 4 batch-collection tests did pass). This re-run is to get a clean bulk verdict from a run where e2e doesn't tear the job down first.

Also re-verified the idle-grace fix in the head commit directly: in collect_batch (pkgs/id/src/log_sync.rs), an arrival sets grace_end = None, so the 5ms grace is an idle wait restarted on each arrival — the set-once defect from the previous head is not present in 0c80543f.

Next: read attempt 2's verdict. Bulk green → merge PR #255 and close #241. Bulk Timeout(30s) again → ingest batching is fully exonerated; investigate delivery pacing on the sender/protocol side.

Sweep update (2026-10-18 09:00 CDT): attempt 2 of run 39103176678 (head 0c80543f) has finished — see the full verdict on #241.

Short version: all 4 batch-collection tests pass in both id-test-unit and id-ci, but the bulk test still fails Timeout(30s) at log_sync.rs:844 in both (1489 passed / 1 failed, no ENOSPC, no e2e masking this time). Ingest batching is exonerated; the stall is in delivery pacing upstream of the ingest worker.

Keeping this PR open and unmerged for now: the batching change is sound and unit-verified, but it does not fix #241, so it should not land claiming to. Next step is a CI-side pacing diagnostic (bulk test unloaded / phase timing) per #241.
