📝 Walkthrough

The SSH shell now accepts line-based chat and commands instead of forwarding each terminal packet as input. It supports records and bounded, read-only access to public text documents. The SSH server passes its blob store to the shell.

Changes: SSH Terminal Command Shell

Layer / File(s) Summary
Blob-store wiring and shell state
pkgs/id/src/commands/serve.rs, pkgs/id/src/world_ssh.rs
The SSH server passes a blob store through to clients. Shell setup initializes command processing, a terminal line buffer, and record-pagination state.
Terminal line and command processing
pkgs/id/src/world_ssh.rs, doc/2026-10-07T00-20-00Z_architecture_roc_worlds/2026-10-07T00-20-00Z_architecture_roc_worlds.md
The shell buffers terminal input across packets, handles line endings and editing controls, and discards overlong lines and escape sequences. It parses chat, /input, /records, /documents, /document, /help, and /quit. Tests cover line handling, command parsing, and chat submission.
Record and document results
pkgs/id/src/world_ssh.rs, doc/2026-10-07T00-20-00Z_architecture_roc_worlds/2026-10-07T00-20-00Z_architecture_roc_worlds.md, pkgs/id/src/blob_gate.rs
The shell renders paginated records with a 384 KiB output limit. Document listing filters names and is limited to 512 items and 32 KiB; document reads accept complete UTF-8 .txt, .md, or .markdown blobs up to 64 KiB. Tests cover record rendering and document listing and viewing. The architecture document also records the SSH command behavior and test coverage. Other changed document text and the FoldedWorlds::new formatting do not alter stated behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 32c19

SSH users may see unintended chat text, corrupted edited messages, or an unexpected disconnect. The architecture document may also leave the formatting check failing, so these issues warrant resolution before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 32c19

The new commands retain the existing world capability checks and restrict document viewing to bounded, read-only public text. One limited integrity concern remains: overloaded input queues can discard fragments and cause a different command payload to be submitted. No privilege escalation was established, but deployment-specific exposure remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Queue saturation silently discards SSH packet bytes without invalidating the partial line. Surviving fragments can consequently form a different accepted chat or /input payload, which is submitted under the participant's authority and can affect shared world state. Packet loss already existed, but stateful command reconstruction is new. The demonstrated scope is the affected session; no privilege bypass or cross-session identity change was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Document browsing addresses public names across the server's shared blob store, not an individual world's document namespace. This follows the documented local-store contract and existing non-dot public-file listing convention. The inspected commands do not write blobs or resolve filesystem paths.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained integrity concern requires queue saturation and a lost fragment or terminator during command assembly. A reconstructed payload still acts under the same session capability; the inspected path does not gain another participant's identity or additional privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The adapter emits join before commands. The joined dispatcher uses its established capability for chat, input and records rather than accepting replacement command authority, and records participation is revalidated for every page.
  • observed — The world-membership blob gate is documented as unwired in the existing server. Its unchanged constructor is not evidence that SSH bypasses a previously enforced gate. The new document boundary is the public-tag validation applied to direct store reads.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Joined sessions terminate on input closure, failed delivery or participant revocation. A session-owned presence guard schedules leave cleanup on exit. Abrupt process termination may interrupt that asynchronous cleanup, but this lifecycle predates the PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — On input queue overflow, close the affected shell or explicitly invalidate incomplete command framing rather than silently joining surviving fragments. Preserve the nonblocking handler design so the mitigation does not introduce the documented output-loop deadlock.

`join denied`. The shell line-buffers fragmented terminal packets: ordinary
complete lines are `chat` frames, `/input <hex>` sends raw program input,
`/records [prefix]` requests capability-authorized record pages, `/help` lists
commands and `/quit` closes the shell. Empty and overlong lines and terminal
control sequences are not submitted. Views clear and repaint the terminal, so
the default program chat/view and records can be used in one session.

The same local blob store opened by `serve` backs `/documents [prefix]` and
`/document <name>`. Listing skips internal dot-tags and is bounded; viewing is
read-only and limited to exact public `.txt`, `.md` or `.markdown` names whose
blob is complete, at most 64 KiB and valid UTF-8. Terminal control characters
are removed. Missing, binary and oversized files are refused; SSH does not
resolve filesystem paths or traverse private namespaces. Collaboration edits
remain in the web ProseMirror editor.

The server host key lives in `.ssh-host-key` (created on first start). Input
is queued with `try_send` rather than awaited: the handler runs on the same
russh loop that flushes output, so waiting for queue space could deadlock.
A flood of keystrokes drops input instead of stalling the session.

Verification: `world_ssh` unit tests drive `serve` with a russh client. A
wrong password is refused inside the shell. With the sandbox feature, the
counter module is installed in-process and the client sees `count=0`, then
`count=1` after `inc`, parsed with `vt100`. The test does not start the full
binary, because its Iroh startup stalls in the sandbox.

pkgs/id/src/world_ssh.rs:590-599
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep unsupported escape sequences in discard mode.

When the SSH shell receives ESC ( 0 x LF, WorldLineBuffer changes from Start to None for (. It then buffers 0x and submits it as Chat("0x"). This violates the world-shell contract that terminal control sequences are not submitted.

Use the existing sequence-discard state for unsupported escape introducers.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove one UTF-8 character on backspace.

When a reachable chat line contains é (0xc3 0xa9), backspace removes only 0xa9. Newline then submits the remaining incomplete byte through from_utf8_lossy, producing instead of an empty line. Remove the last Unicode character at a character boundary.

Update the backspace handling in the `world_ssh` input path so it removes the

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard the Ctrl-D quit check with overflow state.

An overlong line clears self.line but leaves self.overflow set until newline. Ctrl-D then satisfies self.line.is_empty() and queues WorldCommand::Quit. SshIo::recv converts that command to Inbound::Closed, so the shell can close before the overlong line is discarded.
