Once, in ages past, the characters used for playlab sprites would simply
be assigned in a set order based on their starting position. Then, I
added the ability to specify a character for each sprite. But of course
we wanted to keep the existing functionality, so if no character was
defined, we would revert to the old method.

Except I just checked the truthiness. And the Dog character had ID 0.

This makes it so you can use the dog again.
