CI validation update: the initial run exposed a Vitest browser-instance exclusion override, causing the non-PDF jobs to attempt loading the missing WASM module and time out. Fixed in fcda12c: apply the split in the shared browser configuration, including the explicit root-relative package test path. Verified with |

Checked the CodeRabbit report-merging finding against the current branch: |
|
Final validation complete: final commit 9b0dc passed all build, six non-PDF shards, three PDF browser jobs, report, and preview jobs in 5m52s (run 37506252442), then passed again in 6m27s (run 37506836717). Historical baselines were 10m45s–12m09s; final observed reduction is 40–52%. Typst jobs fell from ~4m15s to 48–60s. The intervening comment-reaction test failure is documented in the PR body and passed on the subsequent run. CodeRabbit completed review of the final commit and reports minimal merge risk with no demonstrated merge-blocking issue. Vite+ task caching was removed after measurements showed negligible reuse; WASM caching and independent non-PDF execution remain. |
|
Following up on the task-cache hit rate: reproduced a fresh-checkout miss locally and confirmed it matches upstream vite-task issue #504 (negative globs do not filter directory-listing children). Commit ac07190 excludes only the library package-root listing while explicitly fingerprinting root build-config files, preserving automatic source and workspace-dependency tracking. It also excludes runner-local pnpm install metadata and explicitly tracks the lockfile/workspace config. Local fresh-output replay now hits 2/2 core subtasks and restores declarations/bundles. Source and lockfile changes invalidate both subtasks; a changed core declaration invalidates the React declaration build. Re-enabled the package task cache under a new v2 key to measure cold/warm CI reuse. The Typst job retains its separate WASM cache. CI results and net transfer benefit will follow. |
|
Validated the remaining-miss fixes on fresh CI runners: https://github.com/TypeCellOS/BlockNote/actions/runs/37518282238/attempts/2 . All 13 jobs passed. Build tasks achieved 43/43 cache hits (100%); package-build wall time was 2s versus 24s in the seeding run. Task archive restore/save each took approximately 3s (151 MB compressed). Unit tests still executed deliberately with --no-cache (0/17 hits). The fixes cover compiler/playground generated-directory fingerprints, test-only AI environment reads, and README copies modeled as outputs. Local probes confirm real source, Rust, README, lockfile, dependency-declaration, and configuration changes still invalidate affected work. Total workflow was 6m19s; browser/report jobs now dominate, so the build-step improvement is not a claim of equivalent whole-workflow savings. CodeRabbit latest follow-up review is still processing. |
|
Implemented the low-risk advisor follow-ups in e35e478: report merging now runs on the host (with the producer checkout paths mapped for source/stack compatibility), duplicate explicit installs are removed because pinned setup-vp already installs, and task caches use one immutable key per merge commit within a fresh weekly generation. Offline replay matched both successful and failing reports: 211 project/file results and all 71 source snippets unchanged. Full CI measurement is next. Metadata-only job skipping is intentionally deferred: skipped required checks can accidentally supersede failures; a safe reuse design must prove that the exact merge commit previously passed. Test coverage, failure reporting, and deployment isolation remain unchanged. |
|
Follow-up validation found that a forward symlink preserves report content but not Vitest’s canonical-root result IDs: a passing merge still exited 1. Fixed the host report job by relocating only its disposable checkout to the recorded |

Final verification passed all 13 jobs twice on fe2c554: 5m13s, then 5m03s including report preview (historical baselines 10m45s–12m09s). Host report job: 46s/51s versus 106s previously, with source/result parity and correct failure propagation validated. Both runs retained 43/43 build-task hits; the same-commit rerun restored the exact 90 MB cache and explicitly skipped saving another archive. Duplicate installs removed; weekly cache generations prevent indefinite inner-cache carryover, but are not a hard storage cap. CodeRabbit completed review through fe2c5 with minimal merge risk and no actionable blocker. All test coverage and deployment isolation remain unchanged. |
Summary
Measured results
Durations below are earliest job start to last job completion, including report preview; runner scheduling still introduces variation.
All optimized timing samples in the table passed Build, six non-PDF shards, three PDF browser jobs, report merge, and preview jobs. The final two passing runs are 51–58% below these historical baselines, not a guaranteed bound. Report merging dropped from 106s to 46–51s after removing its container; browser/report work and runner scheduling now dominate total duration. The WASM archive is approximately 8 MB compressed; restore takes roughly 1 second. Cold Rust compilation remains necessary when its inputs change, but no longer blocks non-PDF tests. The initial cold compiler job took 4m26s; that workflow exposed a Vitest exclusion override and its non-PDF jobs timed out. The exclusion fix was verified with test discovery and passing workflows.
Vite+ task-cache investigation
The initial official cache approach restored successfully but achieved 0/44, then 1/44 task hits (82 ms saved). A follow-up reproduced Vite Task #504: generated
types/entries invalidate automatic package-root directory listings even when output files are excluded. pnpm's machine-specificnode_modules/.modules.yamlalso invalidated bundler tasks.scripts/build-cache-inputs.tsnow preserves automatic source/dependency tracking, excludes only the exact package-root listing plus generated outputs and pnpm metadata, explicitly tracks root configuration files, and fingerprintspnpm-lock.yaml/pnpm-workspace.yaml. Declaration outputs are included for dev-scripts. Only the Build job restores the task cache; tests still execute with--no-cache.The first fresh-runner warm rerun achieved 37/44 hits (84%) and reduced package builds 33s → 19s. The remaining misses were diagnosed and fixed without ignoring real source changes:
Fresh-runner warm runs achieved 43/43 hits (100%), with Vite Task reporting approximately 64s of aggregate task execution avoided (not wall time). Package builds took 2s, versus 24s in the seeding run. The earlier task archive reached 151 MB compressed; restore and post-job save each took approximately 3s. Unit tests still executed with 0/17 hits because
--no-cacheis intentional. Cache keys now identify the week and exact merge commit rather than every run/attempt: same-commit reruns reuse the snapshot, and a weekly namespace with no older fallback prevents indefinite accumulation inside restored archives. This is not a hard byte limit or explicit deletion of old GitHub cache entries; normal cache eviction still applies. Runner variation prevents attributing all timing differences solely to caching.Metadata-only PR edits remain unchanged: blindly skipping required jobs can overwrite failed checks with passing skipped checks for the same SHA. No test coverage, required-job identity, or deployment permissions were relaxed for a nominal speedup.
The final same-commit rerun restored the exact 90 MB v3 task snapshot, retained 43/43 hits, and logged
Cache hit occurred on the primary key …, not saving cache. Thus the rerun did not create another task-cache archive.Validation and review

The subsequent run passed all jobs in 6m27s, including that test. This intermittent test failure is not hidden by the passing timing samples.Related build design: #3020.
