Summary

Split coherent asyncio native + related Python changes from #8954:

  • Reject native Future/Task reinitialization before changing existing state; validate explicit task contexts and restore current-task/eager/general registration after failed eager context entry.
  • Generate six complete library/test files using actual individual-path scripts/update_lib migrate commands from CPython 3.15.0 d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc: asyncio futures/tasks, concurrent Future's _get_snapshot prerequisite, and their three corresponding test files. Each remains byte-identical to the pinned git blob, including exact-final awaited-by cleanup.
  • Address P2 review: both native awaited-by helpers now ignore non-Future/Task waiters, matching CPython. Synchronous as_completed callbacks no longer record None as an await-graph parent.
  • Adapt the existing RustPython-only stdlib_asyncio.py reentrant hashing fixture to native Future subclasses/instances, preserving its recursion and membership assertions. No new test file is added. The redundant reinitialization snippet was removed; canonical Lib tests provide that coverage.

Eight changed files. No package-wide migration, manual Lib backport, new test waiver, dependency/ABI expansion, or unrelated ownership/GC/cache redesign. Removed reinitialization UAF/refcount cases are canonical upstream changes, not local suppression.

Current validation

Current tested head: 33715c9853b765a333278fa4418c1396b4f2943a.

  • Normal hooks passed after rustfmt's normal formatting/retry; final clean tree and source hashes verified.
  • Matching narrow threaded release build passed with defaults disabled: threading,stdlib,stdio,importlib,host_env.
  • Strict VM/stdlib release all-target Clippy passed with matching explicit narrow features and -D warnings; Rust test targets were compiled, not executed.
  • 26 fresh bounded candidate processes passed: the same 23 individually selected unchanged canonical test methods, two P2 oracle cases, and the exact reviewed awaited-by suffix of the existing native reentrant snippet. The unrelated malformed-registry portion of that snippet was not run.
  • Both P2 oracle cases also passed on the verified exact-final CPython reference: invalid/native/subclass waiter behavior and synchronous callback as_completed → capture_call_graph. Reference Lib was exported cache-free from the pinned git tree. The existing out-of-tree reference dirty-banner metadata caveat remains despite clean source.
  • Every process used private TMP/pycache prefix, -B, optimize=0, 30-second wall/1-GiB address-space/16-MiB combined-output limits, pinned source/binary/runner hashes, and in-process source-origin/native-backend checks. All temporary directories were cleaned. Zero skips, expected/unexpected failures, altered-environment results, warnings, timeouts, or cap hits.

Earlier head 21c233b8680aad68ab832c03f3e45711307e3c5b also passed import smoke and the original selected checks. 55f925885f55c8453b46473ae26098913b486ce6 removed only the redundant new snippet. The current head adds the reviewed native waiter guards and existing fixture adaptation; all six exact-final Lib files remain unchanged. Current-head hosted CI is pending.

This is bounded selected coverage, not full asyncio/concurrent/workspace/CAPI, SSL/network/server, executor/fork, GC/UAF/refcount, or thread-stress validation. The canonical concurrent snapshot stress test is imported unchanged but unrun. Python-class cases retain native loop helpers, not a completely pure-Python runtime. Canonical reinitialization cleanup leaves its callback pending until fixture loop cleanup. Approved local IPv6 import probes, loop socketpairs, automatic GC and process teardown remained enabled. No broad GC/lifetime/thread-safety proof is claimed.

The exact-final _chain_future asyncio-destination path requires a concurrent Future source with _get_snapshot; arbitrary asyncio-to-asyncio chaining support is not claimed.

📝 Walkthrough

Asyncio initialization now validates loop and context state. Eager task startup cleans up task tracking if native context entry fails. Awaited-by helpers now ignore waiters that are not native tasks or futures.

Changes: Asyncio task lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Initialization validation
crates/stdlib/src/_asyncio.rs
Future and Task initialization reject an already-set loop. Task initialization treats None as an omitted context and rejects values that are not a Context.
Eager startup cleanup
crates/stdlib/src/_asyncio.rs
If native context entry fails, eager startup disables pending-destruction logging, restores the previous current task, unregisters eager and scheduled tracking, and returns the error.
Awaited-by waiter handling
crates/stdlib/src/_asyncio.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_asyncio.py
Awaited-by helpers return without changing relationships when the waiter is not a native Task or Future. Tests use Future waiters and retain the recursive-addition check.

P1 Badge Run the mandated validation suite

The commit's Validation section explicitly limits execution to a narrow build/Clippy run and 23 selected cases at an earlier equivalent head, rather than the required workspace and C-API tests. Because this changes both interpreter behavior and Lib/, run the mandated cargo test --workspace ..., cargo test in crates/capi, and relevant release -m test modules before accepting the change instead of relying on selected smoke coverage.

P1 Badge Revert forbidden generated test rewrites

This replaces the existing asyncio Future test input with a concurrent Future, and the same commit changes test logic/data and adds or removes whole tests across all three Lib/test files. The repository's critical test policy permits only adding or removing expectedFailure markers, so restore the original test files rather than rewriting canonical tests to match the implementation.

P2 Badge Ignore missing tasks in awaited-by registration

When as_completed() is constructed from a synchronous event-loop callback, the loop is running but current_task() returns None. This unconditional call reaches _asyncio.future_add_to_awaited_by, whose native implementation stores the waiter without validating it, so a pending native Future gets _asyncio_awaited_by == {None} and asyncio.capture_call_graph(future) then recurses into None and raises TypeError; fix the native helper to ignore non-Future waiters rather than adding a Python-side workaround.

Confirmed against exact-final CPython: both native awaited-by helpers require Future/Task objects for both arguments. RustPython checked only the child, so a synchronous as_completed callback could record None as a parent. The local fix adds waiter validation to both add and discard while retaining the canonical Python source. The existing native reentrant fixture now uses Future subclasses to preserve its intended coverage. The two bounded CPython reference checks pass; matching RustPython build/runtime validation is still pending. The fix has not been pushed yet.

Fixed in 33715c9. Both awaited-by helpers now ignore non-native Future/Task waiters, and the existing native reentrant fixture uses valid Future subclasses without weakening its assertions. The matching narrow release build and strict VM/stdlib all-target Clippy passed. All 26 bounded candidate selections passed: 23 unchanged canonical methods, the two P2 oracle checks, and the reviewed existing awaited-by suffix. Both oracle checks also passed on exact-final CPython. This is selected coverage, not a full workspace/CAPI or GC/thread-stress suite; current-head hosted CI remains pending.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clean up awaited-by state when _wait_for_one() ends.

The head adds the current task to every future in _AsCompletedIterator.__init__. It removes each relation only when that future completes or the timeout fires. If iteration stops after one result, or cancellation interrupts _wait_for_one(), another pending future can retain the task in its awaited-by state indefinitely. Its completion callback also retains the iterator, which retains the task.

Register the task only while _wait_for_one() is active. Discard all remaining relations and clear _cur_task in finally.

Lib/asyncio/tasks.py:898-928
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restore awaited-by edges when gather() setup fails.

gather() adds the current task to each earlier pending child before it converts later arguments. If a later argument is invalid, ensure_future() raises before the outer cleanup callback is installed. The earlier child then retains a stale awaited-by edge while it remains pending. Roll back the edges when argument conversion fails.

P2 Badge Preserve asyncio-to-asyncio future chaining

When both arguments to _chain_future() are ordinary asyncio Futures (an accepted combination per its checks and docstring), completing the source reaches this call and raises AttributeError: repo-wide, _get_snapshot() exists only on concurrent.futures.Future, not on either _PyFuture or native _asyncio.Future. The callback failure leaves the destination pending, so retain the prior asyncio copy path or use the snapshot path only for concurrent sources.

Confirmed by source inspection: this asyncio-to-asyncio private-helper gap is also present in exact-final CPython d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc. This PR’s Lib/asyncio/futures.py is byte-identical to that file. _copy_future_state now explicitly requires a concurrent Future, but _chain_future still accepts two asyncio Futures; neither canonical asyncio implementation provides _get_snapshot.

The in-tree production callers avoid that combination: wrap_future chains concurrent → asyncio (and returns asyncio inputs unchanged); run_coroutine_threadsafe and the asyncio REPL chain Task → concurrent. The compatibility gap remains for direct private-helper callers. I’m retaining the canonical import rather than adding a noncanonical native method, which would also leave _PyFuture and protocol-compatible sources uncovered. No source change or runtime validation was made for this finding.

Assert that unsupported waiters are ignored.

The fixture now exercises only native Future waiters. It no longer checks the changed contract for non-native waiters. Add an unsupported waiter and assert that _asyncio_awaited_by is unchanged after the add call.

Suggested fix
 plain = _asyncio.Future(loop=object())
 waiter = _asyncio.Future(loop=object())
 _asyncio.future_add_to_awaited_by(plain, waiter)
 _asyncio.future_add_to_awaited_by(plain, _asyncio.Future(loop=object()))
 assert waiter in plain._asyncio_awaited_by
+unsupported = object()
+_asyncio.future_add_to_awaited_by(plain, unsupported)
+assert unsupported not in plain._asyncio_awaited_by
 _asyncio.future_discard_from_awaited_by(plain, waiter)

Review comment at @extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_asyncio.py around lines 79 - 97:
Extend the `plain` waiter checks to cover unsupported waiter values: call
`_asyncio.future_add_to_awaited_by` with a plain object and assert that it is
not added to `plain._asyncio_awaited_by`. Keep the existing native Future waiter
assertions unchanged.
