Footnotes

  1. 4 benchmarks were skipped, so the baseline results were used instead. If they were deleted from the codebase, click here and archive them to remove them from the performance reports. ↩

  2. No successful run was found on main (2aacf9d) during the generation of this report, so bbb0f78 was used instead as the comparison base. There might be some changes unrelated to this pull request in this report. ↩

@codspeedbot explain why performance improved

This PR didn't cause the improvement. It's benchmark noise.

CodSpeed compared this PR with bbb0f78, because no run existed yet for its direct parent 2aacf9d. The only differences between the two commits are config files that aren't part of the benchmarked code:

Where the time went. I compared the flame graphs for rustpython[strings.py] from the base and head runs. Almost the whole 6.9 ms difference comes from one function:

Function BASE HEAD
Dict::lookup (called from Dict::insert) 11.0 ms 4.1 ms
ExecutingFrame::run (self) 7.4 ms 7.3 ms
execute_for_iter 8.9 ms 8.9 ms
PyStrIterator::next 3.9 ms 3.9 ms

Why it happens. strings.py and loop_string.py both run a loop like for char in long_string: pass at module level. Every iteration stores char into the globals dict, so they spend most of their time in Dict::insert → Dict::lookup.

benches/microbenchmarks.rs uses Settings::default(), where hash_seed is None. Each benchmark run therefore picks a random string hash seed, so the number of slots probed to find char in the globals dict varies from one run to the next. This is why these two benchmarks have moved between roughly the same two levels on earlier PRs that didn't touch this code (around 843 µs and 937–995 µs for loop_string.py).

Fix. To make these benchmarks stable, set a fixed seed in the harness, for example settings.hash_seed = Some(0); in benches/microbenchmarks.rs. Comment @codspeedbot set a fixed hash seed in the microbenchmark harness and I'll open that change.
