Why And How We Process Your Data:

As detailed below, depending on the circumstances, we may rely on different purposes when processing your data for the Updates Tab. The categories of information we process will depend on the data you choose to provide and the manner in which you use our Services (which determines the information we collect automatically).

The actual information used depends on your factual circumstances, but could include any of the following:

To generally operate and provide the Updates Tab, we:

  • Enable WhatsApp users to use the Updates Tab such as by creating and managing a Channel, sharing, viewing or interacting with Channels Updates or a Status, deleting these updates or a Channel at at your request or mentioning other users in Status Updates.
  • Generate information for Admins and users, including number of Channel followers for Admins, views and reactions to Channels Updates (such as reactions to Channel Updates or responses to polls).
  • Create and maintain a Channel Directory and recommend Channels to users that might be more relevant to them when they view, search or explore Channels. Learn more here.
  • Display Statuses to a user in an order that might be more relevant to them. Status Updates remain end to end encrypted.
  • Analyse log information to resolve crashes and user issues and collect information for troubleshooting, diagnostics and debugging issues related to the Updates Tab.
  • Collect and aggregate activity, system events and metrics (such as latencies) to monitor service performance, reliability, and efficiency of the Updates Tab, so we can ensure and optimise service quality.
  • Test out and experiment with new features on the Updates Tab to see if they work as expected.
  • Keep a log about the Updates Tab-related notifications and updates you receive. For example, we keep a record about when you accept the applicable terms.

To Provide Channels Subscriptions, we:

  • Allow admins to set up and manage Channel Subscriptions, and process information including subscription pricing, billing and renewal periods, cancellations and terminations, and payouts.
  • Allow subscribers to subscribe to and manage Channel Subscriptions, and process information including the subscribed channels, subscription period, and renewal terms.
  • Process information related to subscription payments, including payment method and transaction amount.
  • Work with third-party payment vendors to process subscription payments and manage subscriptions.
  • Provide Channel Subscription Updates to subscribers.
  • Provide and improve Channel Subscriptions.

To show personalised ads on the Updates Tab:

  • If we show you ads on the Updates Tab, we will use your information to show you ads that might interest you and measure how they perform. For example, if you click on an ad about football, we will use that information to show more ads about football in the future.
  • If you have added your WhatsApp account to Accounts Center with other Meta Company Products, we also will use your information across these accounts as described above. To ensure safety, security, and integrity of the Updates Tab.

We use information we have and apply automated data processing techniques and, in some instances, conduct manual (human) review to:

  • Investigate and address violations of our terms and policies, including our WhatsApp Channel Guidelines. For example, we may hide or suspend your Channel if we learn that you are engaged in infringing activities. If your account is banned from WhatsApp, a channel associated with your account may be deleted.
  • Detect, prevent and combat harmful or unlawful behaviour which threatens the security of our users' information, Updates Tab or the WhatsApp service.

For protecting your vital interests or those of another person.

We apply automated processing techniques, conduct manual (human) review and share information with law enforcement in circumstances where someone’s vital interests require protection, such as in the case of emergencies. These vital interests include protection of your or someone else’s life, physical or mental health, wellbeing or integrity.

In protecting such vital interests we aim to combat harmful conduct and promote safety, integrity and security. For example, we compare Channels Information and Channel Updates against a database of known hashed child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and use a combination of automated processing techniques and human review to detect previously unknown CSAM. If we detect apparent CSAM, we report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (learn more about how we work to help fight child exploitation here).

Business intelligence and analytics:

  • To understand usage of the Updates Tab we analyse how users interact with features of the Updates Tab.
  • Generate and validate metrics to understand how and how often features on the Updates Tab are used including by anonymising your information, in order to inform and improve product direction and development and forecast future adoption of features.
  • Analyse usage of the Updates Tab and metrics (like number of followers, reactions and frequency of updates), including by using automated processing techniques, to improve the Updates Tab and its features.
  • Log search queries in and use automated processing techniques to improve the Updates Tab and search recommendations.

To promote safety, integrity and security outside of the performance of our Services. We use information we have and apply automated data processing techniques and, in some instances, conduct manual (human) review to:

  • Detect, prevent and combat unlawful behaviour on the Updates Tab, such as by reviewing Channels Updates or Status Updates (if reported by a user) to determine if they infringe our terms, policies or WhatsApp Channel Guidelines and notifying users about infringing updates and, in some instances, removing access to content and / or suspending the Channel.
  • Log User Reports, aggregated events and actions to identify and understand the techniques being used by the bad actors that may interfere with the Updates Tab or the Service, including your use of Updates Tab.

You can access or port your WhatsApp account information (including your status activity), your Channels activity information and your ads information from Status and Channels using our in-app Request Account Info feature (available under Settings>Account). Our Global Operations

WhatsApp shares information described in the Information We Collect section globally in accordance with this Updates Tab Supplemental Privacy Policy and the WhatsApp Privacy Policy.
