[FEATURE] Add ChatGPT App (Apps SDK) packaging and submit StackQL to the ChatGPT App Directory #699

Open

Description

@jeffreyaven

Summary

Package the existing StackQL MCP server as a native ChatGPT App using the OpenAI Apps SDK and submit it to the ChatGPT App Directory.

StackQL already has a strong distribution story across the MCP ecosystem:

  • ✅ Official MCP Registry
  • ✅ Anthropic Connector Directory
  • ✅ Cursor Directory
  • ✅ MCP Bundle (.mcpb)
  • ✅ npm
  • ✅ PyPI
  • ✅ Docker Hub
  • ✅ GitHub Actions Marketplace
  • ✅ Multiple MCP aggregators

The next logical distribution channel is the ChatGPT App Directory, providing a first-class installation experience for ChatGPT users similar to the Anthropic Connector Directory. The Apps SDK is built on top of MCP, making our existing MCP server a strong foundation for a ChatGPT app. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Goals

  • Package the existing StackQL MCP server as a ChatGPT App.
  • Reuse the existing MCP implementation wherever possible.
  • Provide a one-click installation experience from within ChatGPT.
  • Submit the app for inclusion in the ChatGPT App Directory.
  • Document installation alongside the existing Claude Desktop and MCP client documentation.

Proposed work

Apps SDK integration

  • Create a ChatGPT App wrapper around the existing StackQL MCP server.
  • Expose the existing toolset without introducing duplicate implementations.
  • Implement the required Apps SDK metadata and manifest.
  • Support authentication for cloud providers using the existing StackQL authentication model.
  • Ensure compatibility with the existing transport(s) and deployment model.

App metadata

Provide:

  • Name
  • Description
  • Icon
  • Categories
  • Keywords
  • Privacy Policy
  • Terms of Service
  • Support URL
  • Documentation URL

Documentation

Update the documentation to include:

  • Installing from the ChatGPT App Directory
  • Authentication
  • Supported capabilities
  • Relationship between:
    • ChatGPT App
    • Anthropic Connector Directory
    • Official MCP Registry
    • npm
    • PyPI
    • Docker
    • .mcpb
    • GitHub Actions

The existing installation guide already documents all other installation vectors and should be extended rather than duplicated. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Packaging

Investigate whether this belongs under the existing packaging/MCP layout (alongside the current MCP packaging assets) or as a sibling package.

The implementation should reuse as much of the existing MCP packaging pipeline as possible.

Potential additions may include:

  • Apps SDK project
  • app manifest
  • build scripts
  • packaging
  • CI
  • release automation

CI/CD

Add release automation for:

  • validation
  • packaging
  • App metadata generation
  • submission assets
  • documentation generation

Submission checklist

  • Apps SDK packaging complete
  • Local testing completed
  • Authentication verified
  • Documentation updated
  • App icon and branding prepared
  • Privacy Policy published
  • Terms of Service published
  • Support URL available
  • App submitted to the ChatGPT App Directory
  • Installation documented on stackql.io

Success criteria

A ChatGPT user should be able to:

  1. Open the ChatGPT App Directory.
  2. Search for StackQL.
  3. Click Install.
  4. Authenticate.
  5. Immediately use StackQL tools from ChatGPT.

This should provide a discovery and installation experience comparable to the existing Anthropic Connector Directory integration while leveraging the same underlying StackQL MCP server.
