XcodeBuildMCP Uninstaller - Messaging Improvements

Problem Identified

User Feedback:

"this definitely makes me not want to run it. it should communicate that it will safely only remove the XcodeBuildMCP info and when it does, report that it removed 6 lines, or whatever."

Original Output (Scary):

? Found: AGENTS.md (use --force to remove content)
? Found: CLAUDE.md (use --force to remove content)
? Found: AGENT_QUICK_START.md (use --force to remove)
? Found: .claude directory (use --force to remove)
ℹ Found 4 file(s) - use --force to remove

Issues:

  1. No indication of line counts
  2. Sounds like entire files will be removed
  3. No clear distinction between content removal and file deletion
  4. Doesn't communicate safety

Solution Implemented

✅ NEW Preview Mode Output (Safe and Clear)

✓ Found: AGENTS.md - Will remove 3 XcodeBuildMCP line(s), rest preserved
✓ Found: CLAUDE.md - Will remove 2 XcodeBuildMCP line(s), rest preserved
✓ Found: AGENT_QUICK_START.md - Will delete entire file (XcodeBuildMCP-specific)
✓ Found: .claude directory - Will delete (XcodeBuildMCP-specific)
ℹ Found 4 file(s) - use --force to remove

✅ Force Mode Output (Clear Confirmation)

✓ Removed 3 XcodeBuildMCP line(s) from AGENTS.md, rest preserved
✓ Removed 2 XcodeBuildMCP line(s) from CLAUDE.md, rest preserved
✓ Deleted: AGENT_QUICK_START.md (XcodeBuildMCP-specific file)
✓ Deleted: .claude directory (XcodeBuildMCP-specific)
✓ Cleaned: 4 of 4 item(s)

Key Improvements

1. Line Count Reporting in Preview Mode

  • Shows EXACT number of lines that will be removed
  • User knows exactly what to expect before running --force
  • Example: "Will remove 3 XcodeBuildMCP line(s)"

2. Safety Messaging

  • Every content removal message ends with "rest preserved"
  • Makes it crystal clear that important content won't be deleted
  • Reduces anxiety about running the script

3. Clear Distinction

  • Content Removal: "Will remove X line(s), rest preserved"
  • File Deletion: "Will delete entire file (XcodeBuildMCP-specific)"
  • User immediately knows which operation applies to each file

4. Positive Visual Indicators

  • Changed from ? (question mark) to (checkmark)
  • Conveys safety and confidence
  • Less threatening appearance

5. XcodeBuildMCP-Specific Labeling

  • Files marked as "XcodeBuildMCP-specific" to indicate they're safe to delete
  • Reinforces that these files were created by the installer
  • No risk to user's custom files

Technical Implementation

Python Script Changes

Modified remove_xcodebuildmcp_content() function:

# Now returns actual count even in preview mode
if not self.force:
    return removed_count  # Instead of returning -1

# Force mode: actually make the changes
if self.backup:
    self.backup_file(file_path)

Updated messaging:

if removed_lines > 0:
    if not self.force:
        print(f"✓ Found: {filename} - Will remove {removed_lines} XcodeBuildMCP line(s), rest preserved")
    else:
        print(f"✓ Removed {removed_lines} XcodeBuildMCP line(s) from {filename}, rest preserved")

Bash Script Changes

Modified remove_xcodebuildmcp_content() function:

# In preview mode, return the count without making changes
if [ "$FORCE_DELETE" = false ]; then
    rm -f "$temp_file"
echo $removed_count # Returns actual count
    return
fi

Updated messaging:

if [ "$removed_lines" -gt 0 ]; then
    if [ "$FORCE_DELETE" = false ]; then
        echo -e "✓ Found: $file - Will remove $removed_lines XcodeBuildMCP line(s), rest preserved"
    else
        echo -e "✓ Removed $removed_lines XcodeBuildMCP line(s) from $file, rest preserved"
    fi
fi

User Experience Impact

Before

User Reaction: "this definitely makes me not want to run it"

After

User Gets:

  • Clear, specific information about what will happen
  • Exact line counts for content removal
  • Confidence that their important files are safe
  • Easy-to-understand distinction between operations
  • Reassuring visual indicators (✓ instead of ?)

Validation

Test Case: Repository with Mixed Content

Setup:

AGENTS.md:
  - 3 lines containing "XcodeBuildMCP"
  - 5 lines of user content

CLAUDE.md:
  - 2 lines containing "XcodeBuildMCP"
  - 4 lines of user content

AGENT_QUICK_START.md: XcodeBuildMCP-created file
.claude/: XcodeBuildMCP-created directory

Preview Output:

✓ Found: AGENTS.md - Will remove 3 XcodeBuildMCP line(s), rest preserved
✓ Found: CLAUDE.md - Will remove 2 XcodeBuildMCP line(s), rest preserved
✓ Found: AGENT_QUICK_START.md - Will delete entire file (XcodeBuildMCP-specific)
✓ Found: .claude directory - Will delete (XcodeBuildMCP-specific)

After --force:

✓ Removed 3 XcodeBuildMCP line(s) from AGENTS.md, rest preserved
✓ Removed 2 XcodeBuildMCP line(s) from CLAUDE.md, rest preserved
✓ Deleted: AGENT_QUICK_START.md (XcodeBuildMCP-specific file)
✓ Deleted: .claude directory (XcodeBuildMCP-specific)

File Verification:

  • ✅ AGENTS.md: 5 user lines preserved
  • ✅ CLAUDE.md: 4 user lines preserved
  • ✅ AGENT_QUICK_START.md: Deleted
  • ✅ .claude/: Deleted

Summary

Status: ✅ Complete and Tested

Changes:

  1. Line counts displayed in preview mode
  2. "rest preserved" messaging added
  3. Clear distinction between content removal and file deletion
  4. "XcodeBuildMCP-specific" labels added
  5. Visual indicators changed from ? to ✓

Result: Users now have complete confidence in what the uninstaller will do, making them comfortable running it.
