XcodeBuildMCP Uninstaller - Feedback & Output Improvements

Problem Fixed

When users entered a path with spaces, the script would process it but not show clear feedback about what was happening. Users would just see the prompt appear again without understanding if anything was found or removed.

Solution Implemented

Both scripts now provide detailed, real-time feedback at every step.

What Changed

Enhanced Output (Both Scripts)

1. Path Processing Indication

Processing path: /Users/dale/My Projects/repo

Users immediately see that their input was received and is being processed.

2. Directory Validation with Clear Messages

✗ Repository not found: /path/that/does/not/exist
  Make sure the path exists and you have permission to access it

Users know exactly why the path failed.

3. File Discovery with Counts

Cleaning documentation from: repo

? Found: AGENTS.md (use --force to remove)
? Found: CLAUDE.md (use --force to remove)
? Found: CLAUDE.md (use --force to remove)
? Found: .claude directory (use --force to remove)

ℹ Found 3 file(s) - use --force to remove

Users can see exactly what was found and what needs to be done.

4. Removal Confirmation (with --force)

✓ Removed: AGENTS.md
✓ Removed: CLAUDE.md
✓ Removed: .claude directory

✓ Cleaned: 3 of 3 item(s)

Users see each item as it's removed with a clear summary.

5. Backup Indication (with --backup)

✓ Backed up: AGENTS.md
✓ Removed: AGENTS.md
✓ Backed up: CLAUDE.md
✓ Removed: CLAUDE.md

Users see that backups are being created.

Three Clear Scenarios

Scenario 1: Preview Mode (No --force flag)

Python Script Improvements

Added:

  • Path processing indication
  • Better error messages with helpful hints
  • File found/removed counting
  • Summary statistics per repository
  • Clear distinction between preview and force modes
  • Better organization of output

Code Quality:

  • All changes are localized to remove_documentation_files()
  • No changes to other functionality
  • Syntax validated
  • Backward compatible

Bash Script Improvements

Added:

  • Path processing indication
  • Better error messages with helpful hints
  • File found/removed counting
  • Summary statistics per repository
  • Clear distinction between preview and force modes
  • Empty line after each repository for readability

Code Quality:

  • All changes are localized to remove_documentation_files()
  • Maintains all quoting for space handling
  • Syntax validated
  • Backward compatible

Files Updated

  • uninstall-xcodebuildmcp.py - Enhanced output and feedback
  • uninstall-xcodebuildmcp.sh - Enhanced output and feedback

Benefits

✓ Users immediately know their input was received

  • "Processing path: ..." shows the path being processed

✓ Users see what was found

  • "Found: AGENTS.md" tells them a file exists

✓ Users understand what to do next

  • "Found 3 file(s) - use --force to remove" explains the next step

✓ Users see what happened

  • "Removed: X" shows each successful removal
  • "✓ Cleaned: 3 of 3" gives final summary

✓ Users get helpful error messages

  • "Repository not found" + "Make sure the path exists..."

Testing

Both scripts have been:

  • ✓ Syntax validated (bash -n, py_compile)
  • ✓ Tested with space-containing paths
  • ✓ Tested with invalid paths
  • ✓ Tested in preview mode
  • ✓ Tested with --force flag
  • ✓ Tested with --backup flag

Backward Compatibility

  • No breaking changes
  • All existing functionality preserved
  • Only improvements to output
  • All existing flags work as before

Example Usage

Test it yourself:

# Using Python (RECOMMENDED)
python3 uninstall-xcodebuildmcp.py
# Enter: /path/to/My Projects/repo
# Now see: "Processing path: /path/to/My Projects/repo"
# Followed by: "Found: X files"

# Using Bash
bash uninstall-xcodebuildmcp.sh
# Same behavior with clearer output

Status: ✓ Complete and Tested Date: 2025-01-21 Impact: Better user experience, clearer feedback
