Let me give you the next critical piece though: reproducibility without randomness. If your bug only happens under specific conditions, you need to reliably trigger it. Otherwise, every test is a coin flip.

Alex: Exactly. Or better yet, you script the exact sequence of operations that triggers it. Sam: That seems reasonable. It turns the agent into an auditable diagnostician rather than a free-floating tool with unrestricted access.

Alex: Right. And honestly, even for production, you still want to reproduce locally when possible. The only time you hit production directly is when the issue is truly production-specific—maybe it's a data volume problem, or a specific traffic pattern you can't simulate.

Sam: I'm thinking about remote debugging in general. If I'm debugging an issue in a customer's environment, this same principle applies, right?

Alex: Absolutely. You'd send them a diagnostic script they can run safely. The script collects data without changing anything—logs, metrics, system state—and returns structured output. You give that output to the agent to analyze. The customer remains in control of what gets shared, and you get quality diagnostic data.

Sam: That's actually way better than asking someone to describe the problem or try to reproduce it themselves.

Alex: And it scales. You can iterate quickly. Customer runs the script again, you get fresh data, the agent analyzes, you propose next steps. No back-and-forth emails about what they saw.

Sam: I want to zoom back out for a second. All of this—reproducible environments, inspection tools, structured data—that's overhead. When do you actually do this? Is this something every team should implement, or is it more for critical systems?

Alex: Good question. Here's my heuristic: the higher the cost of being wrong about the diagnosis, the more you invest in this infrastructure. Critical systems handling payments? Implement this. Internal tooling with two users? Maybe not. But I'd argue that even for medium-sized systems, you benefit from having reproducible environments and basic inspection scripts. It saves time overall.

Sam: Because instead of debugging by trial and error, you're debugging with evidence.

Alex: Yes, it can help design the diagnostic queries, help structure the reproduction test, help analyze the output. But you're directing it. You're saying, "I think the bug is related to X. Let's instrument Y to verify." The agent executes systematically.

Alex: Completely different. You're collaborating with the agent on a diagnostic strategy. It's your medical investigation, the agent is your tireless lab technician.

Sam: Final question: What happens when the agent proposes a fix that seems right but you can't quite reproduce the bug to test it?

Alex: Then you have a gap. And honestly, that's a red flag. If you can't reproduce it, you can't verify the fix, you can't be confident it's correct. Don't ship it. Instead, spend time improving your reproduction. Make the bug more reliable to trigger. Once you can demonstrate it happening consistently, verify the fix works, and only then deploy.

Sam: So the principle is: if you can't reproduce it, you can't confidently fix it.

Alex: That's the core. Production debugging isn't about speed; it's about accuracy. The agent helps you be systematic and efficient, but the rigor comes from you. Demand reproducibility, demand evidence, demand tests. That's how you debug reliably at scale.
