Feature

Slack Introduction/Tutorial Page

Why is this feature being added?

Slack can be very confusing for new members, this will give them an idea of what they are getting into and how slack works.

What should your feature do?

Have screenshots of slack, explain that there are 200 channels, probably explain how to leave and join channels. Encourage people to introduce themselves.

    sooo per @AshTemp slack intro is probably #1 with the map #2 events and successes at #3 and scholarships. She doesn't have an opinion right now where this (slack intro) goes shoot her ideas

    Hi @AshTemp, I'm new to open source and would like to work on this. I think the slack intro can get added to the profile.

    @Marieram I'm not sure what you mean by the profile. The idea here is to create a page on the site that gives folks an intro into what slack is and how we use it to leverage our community. We're still working on designing this page so maybe I'm not quite understanding what you have in mind?

    @marielenna

    @AshTemp I was suggesting where it can go based on the comment before. Sorry, I'm new to this.

    Don't apologize for trying to learn :) I think I sent you a message on the actual slack.

    Self-assigning as a placeholder for @Marieram

    @AshTemp Hey, I'm not fluent in JS and might have been way over my head. I'd like to give this opportunity to someone else. I'll be back to contribute in the future.

    @keg63490 I'd prefer to not show modals when hovering over something, as this is not something that is easily implemented on a mobile/touchscreen. IMO, just adding another icon is fine - that keeps it simple and intuitive, and doesn't require multiple clicks. It's also consistent with the pattern we've established to get to some of the other pages (clicking on an icon).

    Ok, so I think y'all missed the part where there is no design for this page yet. This issue is for the standalone page for the community.

    @lianthompson

    I'd be happy to work on this page!

    @keg63490 How are you progressing on this, any blockers we can help with?

    @kylemh @jjhampton @AshTemp I disagree with the premise of this issue. I think this can be handled with the user sign up. I am open to arguments, but I think if we fix the sign-up this becomes a non-issue. Also, I think it is strange to have a page specifically for slack on-boarding. If we communicate better who we are in our main page this issue becomes obsolete.
