[Bug] Non-editable pip install of lcb_runner yields a broken package: all subpackages are missing #155

Describe the bug

Installing the repo non-editable (e.g. pip install ., uv pip install ., or building a wheel/sdist) produces a broken lcb_runner: only the top-level package is shipped, and lcb_runner.benchmarks, .evaluation, .prompts, .runner, .utils are all missing. Importing any of them fails:

  python -c "import lcb_runner.evaluation.testing_util"
  # ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'lcb_runner.evaluation'

Root cause: pyproject.toml pins packages = ["lcb_runner"] in [tool.setuptools], so setuptools only packages the top-level module and never
discovers the subpackages. The README's uv pip install -e . works because editable installs resolve submodules straight from source, which is why this has gone unnoticed.

To Reproduce

  1. git clone https://github.com/LiveCodeBench/LiveCodeBench.git
  2. cd LiveCodeBench && python -m venv .venv && . .venv/bin/activate
  3. pip install . # non-editable
  4. python -c "import lcb_runner.evaluation.testing_util" -> ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'lcb_runner.evaluation'

Expected behavior

A non-editable install should be usable, e.g. python -m lcb_runner.runner.main should run and import lcb_runner.evaluation... should succeed.

Fix

Replace the explicit packages list with package discovery:

  [tool.setuptools]
  packages = ["lcb_runner"]

->
[tool.setuptools.packages.find]
include = ["lcb_runner*"]

I plan to open a PR with this fix.
