Unable to trace ROI based on externally loaded symbols using PIN tracer. #727

Open

Description

@HimDek

Describe the bug
Unable to trace using Intel PIN tracer with -start_symbol and -stop_symbol options if the symbols are loaded dynamically from external libraries. Tracer exits if the specified symbols are not found in main executable.

To Reproduce

  1. Build Intel PIN tracer
  2. Trace a program using pin with -start_symbol and -stop_symbol that are loaded externally.
pin -t $TRACER -o trace.fifo \
  -start_symbol ggml_compute_forward_mul_mat \
  -stop_symbol ggml_compute_forward_mul_mat \
  -t 400000000 \
  -- /home/hide/llama.cpp/build-debug/bin/llama-cli \
  -hf ggml-org/SmolVLM-256M-Instruct-GGUF \
  -ngl 0 -st -s 45 --prompt "Why is the sky blue?"
  1. Terminates with error: [PIN] ERROR: Trace start symbol 'ggml_compute_forward_mul_mat' not found!

Expected behavior
PIN should wait till program being traced exits which checking if symbols are found from external library, and start tracing if found.
