I have been using Speak for a few months now learning French. I’ve tried Duolingo as well as over half of the major apps that pop up when you search “learn French” in the App Store. This has become by far my favorite app for a number of reasons. 1. This app focuses on speaking, one of the largest things I’ve struggled with in learning French. I could memorize vocabulary, but the second I hear it morphed in a sentence I would be lost. This app has improved that aspect so much for me. I am not yet fluent, but am able to pick out words and sayings on French videos and French hockey broadcasts now. 2. The ability to bookmark for later is a game changer for me. I have saved both sentences that I plan to use and things that I feel like I should know. This has allowed me to go back and study them, remember the vocabulary as well as the pronunciation. This allows these to become just stored in my mind where I don’t feel like I’m having to translate in my mind when I hear French. 3. Probably the most helpful tool is the free talk, as well as the ability to create your own lessons at the end of units. This has tailored the app to be personalized to me, and I’m learning about things that I’m actually going to use in conversation. All in all, this app wins in almost every single category compared to anything else I’ve tried. Merci beaucoup!!

I am not a fan of using AI for a few different reasons, but if there was ever something I thought AI should be used for, this is it! I took Spanish a few years in high school, immersed myself in Spanish while at the home of mi mejor amiga y su familia, and tried to hard to learn what I could throughout the years. I can read Spanish easily, and understand Spanish speakers in chunks, but always have a fear of speaking myself. Any time I tried a language app, it was always the most basic of vocab, and didn’t really meet me at my level or go into common phrases or practice with everyday language or conjugating verbs. This app does all of that and more!!! It starts with a few questions at the very beginning and sets up your lessons based on your responses. For me, it jumped into sentences and had me repeat those in sets, then quizzed me on missing parts of the sentences. Very quickly I was able to recall lots of these sentences. On day 4 or 5, it has a section where it creates a lesson specifically about your profession and what you would like to tell people in conversation. It’s exactly what you would need! And I was so surprised! For the price, it seems like a lot for an app, but for what you get out of it, and from what I can tell a week in, it seems justified. It’s seriously like an in-person class. You get to practice conversations right off the bat and get feedback. For example, I had a conversation with the AI interface and it gave me prompts on what to say. At the end of the conversation, it picks 3 things to go over that I messed up. Very very happy with this app so far!

The best language learning app

Over the past year I've been using several apps to learn Spanish. I've only been using Speak for a week but it is already my favorite one. Many apps don't give you much instruction or explanation and just throw you into word games. Speak gives you reasonably frequent interactive instructional videos (where it pauses to have you repeat the word or phrase that is being introduced) and focuses on just one type of exercise, speaking, with a lot of repetition and small variations during each exercise. I think this more focused and practical approach really helps cement the new words and concepts.One small gripe: the UI doesn’t feel as intuitive as it could. For example, when most apps are waiting for voice input there will be some kind of animation, but not on Speak. And in most cases, but not all, you have to tap the bottom of the screen to continue after each question, unless you tap the faint, cryptically named “HFM” button on the top, in which case it will automatically advance after a second or two. But then with HFM on, if you make a mistake you don’t get a chance to correct it, it still just advances to the next question.

I think this is the first review I’ve ever left for an app. This app has been such a game changer for me. I ended up purchasing the subscription (by accident lol) but I’m absolutely going to be renewing next year. I’ve always wanted to be a polyglot and I’ve made progress on my own with Spanish and Japanese, but classes are expensive and self teaching can be hard.Now this app isn’t the *only* thing I use to learn languages, but it has become one of the more useful tools in my arsenal. Languages really are use it or lose it, and this allows me to practice my speaking and comprehension wherever and whenever. The free talk is so so helpful.I’ve never been confident in my Spanish, and now I’m speaking (very basic) Spanish with customers and friends!! My only complaint is that there aren’t more languages on here yet. While the languages offered are great, I wish there were more options like Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, or Tagalog. I know more languages will be available with time, but I am absolutely foaming at the mouth for more options since that has been so helpful for me in such a short span of time lol. I’ve even got my friends and coworkers using the app 😂
